Εκατονταετία του Μεγάλου Πολέμου

Στη Βρετανία μελετάται ιστορικά πάντοτε, με μεγάλη προσοχή και ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, ο Α΄ Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος. Μάλιστα αποκαλείται επισήμως ως «Μεγάλος Πόλεμος».

Τα Βασιλικά Ταχυδρομεία, μέσω της Φιλοτελικής Υπηρεσίας τους, εκδίδουν τα τελευταία χρόνια μια σειρά γραμματοσήμων το χρόνο με σκοπό να μνημονεύσουν τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα του Μεγάλου Πολέμου και να αποτίσουν φόρο τιμής στους πεσόντες.

Η πρόσφατη σειρά, που κυκλοφόρησε στις 21 Ιουνίου 2016, είναι η τρίτη. Θα ακολουθήσουν άλλες δύο, με σκοπό να ολοκληρωθεί το προαποφασισμένο αναμνηστικό πρόγραμμα.

1916 witnessed some of the largest battles in human history, both on land and at sea, and Britain would also face major new challenges at home. Key developments in 1916 included: Evacuation from Gallipoli, Conscription and Conscience, Uprising in Ireland, Clash of the Dreadnoughts, Slaughter on the Western Front, The Crucible of the Somme and The Growing Strain at Home.

Philip Parker, of Royal Mail, said: "A century ago our armed forces were making the ultimate sacrifice on land and at sea, and non-combatants were making an extraordinary contribution overseas and on the home front. Our stamp issue pays tribute to all."
