Consecration of the Church in Torquay

This concerns the Greek church of Saint Andrew the Apostle in the town of Torquay, Devon. The town lies on the coast of the English Channel, and already in the middle of the twentieth century a group of Orthodox Cypriots and Greeks settled there. They established a church community and, in 1976, succeeded in obtaining for their religious needs an old church building that was no longer in use, situated within an old Anglican cemetery. This was related to me by the secretary of the parish council, Robert Skrivanos, who is half Greek and half English.

For decades afterwards, the church was served by Fr Gregory Carpenter, an Englishman who had embraced the Orthodox faith in his youth, studied and specialised in Greece, and became a priest under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. At his ordination he was given the name of Saint Gregory Palamas, and now no one uses his English name anymore; he is simply Fr Gregory.

Eight years ago, I began from time to time to serve together with Fr Gregory in the church, where, alongside the Cypriots, many Greeks from Greece had also begun attending regularly. Orthodox faithful from other nationalities also came, mainly immigrants from Eastern Europe, as well as English converts to Orthodoxy.

Seven years ago, because of old age and certain infirmities, Fr Gregory entrusted me (with the blessing of Archbishop Nikitas) with the responsibility of serving the parish. In 2023 I officially received a letter from the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain informing me that I had become the principal priest of the parish.

When Fr Gregory was handing over the parish documentation to me, he remarked that the church had never actually been consecrated. This struck me as rather strange: how could services be celebrated in a church that had never been consecrated? As far as I had heard from him, many bishops had visited over the years, but either they had forgotten this fact or had simply paid no attention to it.

One day, Robert and I began looking through the documents and discovered that the Greek-Cypriot community had leased the abandoned Anglican church of St Saviour’s in 1976 and had entered into negotiations with the cemetery authorities in order to purchase it. In October 1978 the final legal document granting ownership of the church was received from the Queen (an English matter indeed!), excluding the pathway and burial plots. Even before the signature of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had been obtained, services had already been celebrated there by Orthodox priests visiting from other towns. This year (2026) marks fifty years since Orthodox services first began to be celebrated in this church.

As parish priest (although with an unresolved formal transfer from the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to the local Archdiocese), I considered that this jubilee presented a suitable occasion to request from our Archbishop Nikitas the consecration of our church. A long correspondence then followed with his secretary, Archdeacon George, with months of waiting for a reply, until it was finally decided that the Archbishop’s young vicar, Bishop Maximos of Melitene, would come and consecrate the church.

As you may imagine, the consecration of a church may happen only once in the life of a priest, and it may never happen at all if he serves in an already-consecrated church. As a priest serving in the Diocese of Plovdiv and in the Diocese of Vidin, I had never before attended such a consecration. As the Bishop himself said in his homily, it was also his first time performing one. The rite itself is quite complex, and because no experienced priest could be found within the Archdiocese to prepare the special mixture required, a priest had to come all the way from Thessaloniki. This further complicated our preparations. Fr Ignatios, who came, spoke only Greek, and I was left somewhat suspended, relying entirely upon my Greek-speaking altar assistants to prepare everything necessary for the consecration.

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, we welcomed Bishop Maximos, the Greek priest Fr Ignatios, and Archdeacon George at the church at 6 p.m. They brought relics to be placed within the Holy Altar Table. The relics consisted of particles of Saint Menas (11 November), Saint Paraskevi the Virgin-Martyr of Rome (26 July), and an unnamed martyr from the Lavra of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified, who was slain when the Persians devastated Palestine and massacred the monks of the Lavra in 614. The Church commemorates them on 16 May.

We served Solemn Great Vespers. The church was full. At the conclusion, the holy relics were brought out for veneration.

After Vespers, the priests and parish council members went for dinner at a Bulgarian-Romanian restaurant. We ate fasting dishes, and such a pleasant conversation unfolded that, although darkness had not yet fallen (these are now the longest days here in the North), at ten o’clock I said to everyone: “Go home now, because tomorrow an important work awaits us!”

The Historic Day: 21 June 2026

In the morning, we began Matins at 9 a.m. The Bishop and the other guests arrived at 9:25. The church was already full. Around 10:30 the actual consecration began. I was merely an observer of something truly unique.

In advance, we had cut an opening measuring approximately 15 x 15 x 15 cm in the centre of the Altar Table. Into this we placed many names of both the living and the departed, brought by parishioners to be sealed there “until the Second Coming,” as the Bishop read aloud.

First we washed the Altar Table with water and dried it. Then Fr Ignatios wrapped the small reliquary in cloth and placed it into the opening together with the names. During Matins he had melted the wax-mastic mixture (an aromatic blend of pure beeswax, pure incense, mastic and other fragrant substances). He poured several packets of marble powder into the opening and then filled it to the top with the wax mixture. This mixture cools quickly (just as candle wax does when it drips), but it also expands slightly. When Fr Ignatios placed the marble cover over it, it would not fit into the opening but protruded above the surface.

A commotion followed. The now-hardened mixture had to be scraped away. A second and third attempt also failed to make the cover fit level with the surrounding marble so that the surface of the Holy Altar Table would remain smooth. We had certainly drawn the attention of everyone in the church outside the sanctuary.

Afterwards, much fragrant oil and perfume was poured upon the Holy Altar Table while we priests wiped it thoroughly with towels. Then, before placing the white covering upon the Altar Table, Fr Ignatios poured the wax mixture in the form of a cross at both ends, and the covering became permanently affixed to the Altar Table. We completed the vesting with the remaining white coverings. This took quite a long time, although Fr Ignatios worked quickly.

Finally, we continued with the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy.

Before the conclusion, at my suggestion the Bishop tonsured two men as Readers to assist me in the altar, while Fr Brandon Gallagher of Exeter, ordained three years ago and a professor of theology, read the prayer appointing him as a spiritual father and confessor—something we do not have in Bulgaria. This means that he may now hear confessions. This is a great help to me, because until now his parishioners had to travel from Exeter to Torquay for confession. I myself also travelled there twice a year, before Pascha and before Christmas, in order to hear their confessions.

We finally finished around 2:30 p.m. In the church grounds the young men had erected a tent, while the women had set out tables. The Bishop offered a blessing, and people lined up in an orderly manner to refresh themselves. We had the opportunity for everyone to speak with one another. Some sat beside the Bishop to share their concerns with him. Many people came to me expressing their joy at this unique service.

I had thought that five and a half hours might prove too much for them, but they were full of joy. Pilgrims had come from the parishes in Exeter and Plymouth, but what was most interesting was that people had also come from London, the Midlands, and Cornwall.

At around four o’clock our guests departed and we began tidying everything away.

As I said to my parishioners: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

May God, through the prayers of Saint Andrew, Saint Menas, and Saint Paraskevi the Great-Martyr, fill this house of His with faithful followers from among whom future chanters, monks, and priests may arise. Amen.

COTY in Torquay

On 18 April 2026, when the Paschal joy had not yet faded from the hearts of the faithful, something small -and perhaps easily overlooked- took place in the seaside town of Torquay.

It was announced as the first Orthodox youth gathering there. The kind of thing people imagine will be full-laughter, crowded church, voices echoing through the nave. Yet that morning, the church of St Andrew Torquay stood quieter than expected.

Father Trayan Goranov had prepared for fifty. There were far fewer.

The tables, laid out with care -sandwiches, sweets, cakes prepared with love- seemed almost too generous. Even he, who had seen much in parish life, was surprised. On ordinary Saturdays, for Vespers and discussion, more people would come.

But grace does not measure by numbers.

At 12:30, the day began not with chatter, but with prayer - the solemn, radiant rhythm of the Paschal Hours. The words of the Resurrection, still fresh from the Feast, filled the church again. A visiting priest, Father Gregory Floridis, stood among them, lending his voice to the singing. It was not loud. But it was alive.

Afterward, Father Trayan spoke. He told the history of the ancient church that now shelters a small, multinational flock under the omophorion of the Archbishop of Thyateira. Stones, he reminded them, remember. Walls, if we listen, speak.

Then came the theme of the day: “Pascha: The Feast of Feasts and Triumph of Triumphs.”

The Reader Arsenios-Charlie Copleston - stood by the whiteboard, carefully writing each point, as if preserving something fragile. The words were familiar. And yet, in that small gathering, they seemed newly discovered.

Before the food was touched, Father Gregory spoke again -lightly, warmly-adding details, insights, small treasure of meaning, about the Resurrection in our lives as Orthodox Christians. Theological insights, quoting from Scripture and from the hymnology of the Church. The kind that does not demand attention, but reward it.

Then came the meal and getting to know each other.

Outside, the sun had broken through, as if it too had decided to attend. The group walked toward the sea, toward the harbour where the water shimmered against the anchored yachts.

They walked the pier together.

Fishermen stood there, patient and unsmiling, casting their lines again and again - catching nothing. The sea, they said, had been rough in the past days. The fish had withdrawn into the depths.

No one laughed at them. Something about it felt… familiar.

The wind grew stronger, as it does by the sea. They turned back inland, and Father Gregory, with the ease of one among friends, offered to buy coffee. Tables were pulled together outside - too eagerly, perhaps. A waitress, firm and unyielding, reminded them that even good intentions can obstruct others.

So, the tables were separated. And for a moment, so were they.

Back at the church about 5 pm, time pressed gently but insistently. Father Gregory had a long journey ahead - five hours to London. They sent him off first, reluctantly, as one sends away a brother rather than a guest.

Then something deeper began.

The discussion about repentance and confession.

And suddenly, the questions multiplied.

Not abstract questions - but careful ones. Hesitant ones. Questions that revealed distance. It became clear: many had never confessed.

Or not truly.

And beneath every question, there was one unspoken concern, finally said out loud:

Is it really secret? What if the priest reveals to others our deeds and thoughts?

Father Trayan did not rush his answer. He spoke plainly, firmly - like a man placing a cornerstone:

Nothing -under any circumstance- would ever be revealed. What is confessed is sealed, not by discipline alone, but by something far greater.

The room grew quieter. Not empty - quiet.

Later, the singer Molly (Maria) McEwan arrived, and together they served Vespers for the eve of St. Apostle Thomas. The same Thomas who doubted. The same Thomas who didn’t want to touch, because his faith was great and who later proved it with his martyrdom. It seemed fitting.

Evening came, though no one welcomed it.

They lingered. Conversations stretched. Goodbyes were delayed, then delayed again. As if, by refusing to part, they might hold the day in place.

But distance called them back.

One would travel 120 miles to Falmouth.
Others, 200 miles to Birmingham.
The rest would return to Plymouth, Exmouth, and nearby towns.

Small places. Scattered people.

It had not been a large gathering.

It had not been impressive.

No crowd, no spectacle, no overflowing hall.

And yet - Something had begun.

Those who were not able to travel from afar to join us or could not make it may never quite understand what they missed.

Not because it was grand. But because it was real.

Panorthodox Vespers in Bristol

Very Reverend Fathers,

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we gather tonight in this sacred space, we are reminded of the beautiful tapestry of Orthodoxy - a unity that transcends languages, borders, and cultures. This Pan-Orthodox Vespers is a witness to the truth that we are one in Christ, members of the same Body, united by the same faith, partakers of the same Eucharist, and called to the same mission.

1. Unity in Diversity

The psalms we chant in our Services remind us of the universal nature of our God: “From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised” (Psalm 113:3). Each one of us here tonight brings a unique heritage - British, Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Arab and beyond. Yet, in Christ, these differences do not divide but enrich the Church. Just as the early Church was composed of both Jews and Gentiles, we are called to live as one family, glorifying God in harmony.

Saint Paul’s words resonate powerfully: “There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). Tonight, we embody that truth, standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer, reminding the world that our unity is not based on earthly identities but on our common faith in the Risen Lord.

2. The Vespers Service as a Reflection of our Journey

Vespers marks the transition from day to night, from labour to rest. It is a time to reflect, give thanks, and prepare for what lies ahead. In the same way, our gathering tonight marks a spiritual transition - a reminder that we are called to move from division to unity, from isolation to communion.

The hymns and prayers call us to repentance, humility, and gratitude. They remind us that we are all pilgrims on the same path, journeying toward the Kingdom of God. In this journey, none of us walks alone. We walk together, supporting one another in love and faith.

3. A Shared Mission

As Orthodox Christians, we share a sacred responsibility: to be the light of Christ in the world. Our world is often fragmented, divided by conflict, misunderstanding, and fear. Yet, as Christ tells us, “By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Our unity tonight is not just for ourselves but for the world. It is a testament that Christ is in our midst.

We are called to be peacemakers, healers, and witnesses of the Gospel. Whether in our parishes, workplaces, or homes, let us strive to live the Gospel authentically. Let us support one another in charity and prayer, especially in times of difficulty.

4. The Youth show the way

Allow me to share with you here tonight some fascinating and exciting news.

A little while ago a new and inspiring group has been formed within our Sacred Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. It is called COTY, and it means Christian Orthodox Thyateira Youth.

Shortly after the formation of that Youth group I was informed by its leaders and we talked about organising some kind of an event here in Bristol. I thought a lot and prayed deeply about it and eventually I suggested that we could possibly organise a local branch, a SW England COTY, which could bring together the Orthodox Youth from all parts, cities and Orthodox Communities from the SW of England as well as from the South Wales.

The Central COTY Committee members realised that was a good idea and we had the first meeting of our Youth here in this Parish, on 30th November last year, followed by the 2nd one in Exeter on 15th February this year. Both events were well attended and highly successful.

Well, it seems like the Youth are showing us the way of unity and cooperation.

In Exeter we’ve met at a hospitable Anglican Church; we had Vespers there, a little talk and we enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner together, at their spacious Church Hall.

In that Church, dedicated to St. James, I’ve noticed that they had in display a wooden sculpture, which was created and offered by an artist named Christine Lee.

The sculpture was called “Compassion” and it shows two angels, hugging and offering compassion, love and care to one another.

Compassion, from the Orthodox Christian perspective, is one of the fundamental virtues highlighted by the Gospel and the teachings of the Church. The concept of compassion is not limited to the expression of mercy or leniency, but concerns a deep internal attitude of love and respect towards another person, especially towards those who are in difficulty or pain.

Compassion means being able to embrace others with a heart filled with God's mercy, showing concern for their needs, and supporting them with prayer and our presence. It is not only an external act but also has an internal dimension, as it requires us to overcome our selfish nature and look at others with God's eyes.

This compassion, which is manifested through solidarity and care for others, reminds us of the way God shows mercy and goodness towards us. In the Orthodox tradition, mercy is directly linked to love (love expressed in actions), humility, and prayer. God calls the faithful to be merciful as He is, offering hope and comfort to their neighbours, especially during this very special and spiritual period of Great Lent.

Compassion is also embodied in the work of the Church, which is called to embrace and relieve the world in every possible way, whether through material aid or spiritual guidance. Thus, the love and prayer of the faithful for others is an expression of God in human life, revitalizing the soul and offering hope and rest.

5. Looking to the Saints

Tonight, we also remember the saints who have walked this path before us. They come from every land and every background, yet they share one thing in common: their unwavering faith in Christ. They inspire us to rise above our differences and to fix our eyes on Him, the “Author and Perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).

Epilogue

Before I finish, I would like to thank Fr. Kyril and the leaders of this Community for the generous hospitality that they offered us this evening.

Beloved in Christ, as we leave this Service, let us carry with us the joy and peace of this gathering. Let our unity in prayer inspire us to deeper love for one another and renewed commitment to our shared mission. Let us go forth as ambassadors of Christ, proclaiming His love to all we meet.

May the Lord, who has brought us together tonight, continue to guide us on our journey and unite us in His Kingdom, where all division is overcome, and all hearts are made one in Him.

To Him be the glory, now and forever. Amen.

Πρώην Αγγλο-Καθολικός Ναός, αφιερωμένος στην Παναγία -St Mary The Virgin- σχεδιάστηκε από τον George Gilbert Scott, χτίστηκε το 1864 στο Stony Stratford του Buckinghamshire.

Η εγγραφή της Κοινότητάς μας ως Καταπίστευμα έγινε τo 2007 με τον επίσημο τίτλο Greek Orthodox Community of Milton Keynes and Surrounding District στο Charities Commission (Reg Charity No 1118744) και πήραμε την απόφαση να προσπαθήσουμε να αποκτήσουμε τον προαναφερθέντα Ναό.
