“Follow Me”

The Call of Christ and the Healing of the Sinner

A Sermon on Luke 5:27-32
At the Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, West Wales, UK
Saturday 10th October 2026

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today’s Gospel reading presents us with one of the most beautiful and encouraging encounters in the earthly ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ: the calling of Levi, the tax collector, who is also known as Matthew. Through this seemingly simple event, the Church invites us to reflect upon three great truths of our Christian faith: the boundless mercy of God, the transforming power of repentance, and the universal invitation to salvation.

The Evangelist Luke tells us that Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax office and said to him just two words: “Follow Me.” Immediately, Levi left everything, rose, and followed Him.

To appreciate the significance of this encounter, we must remember that tax collectors in the time of Christ were generally despised by their fellow Jews. They were associated with the Roman occupying authorities, and many were suspected of dishonesty, greed, and exploitation. They were regarded as sinners and often excluded from respectable religious society.

Yet Christ did not see Levi merely as a tax collector or as a sinner. He saw a human being created in the image and likeness of God, a person capable of repentance, holiness, and spiritual transformation.

This is a fundamental teaching of our Orthodox Christian faith: God does not identify us permanently with our sins. He sees beyond our weaknesses and failures. He sees what we can become through His grace.

The response of Levi is equally remarkable. The Gospel tells us that he left everything and followed Christ. He did not ask for time to consider the invitation. He did not negotiate conditions. He simply responded with faith and obedience.

For us, this raises an important question: when Christ calls us, how do we respond? Do we willingly follow Him, or do we allow our possessions, ambitions, habits, and worldly concerns to hold us back?

Following Christ does not necessarily mean abandoning our employment or family responsibilities. It means placing Christ at the centre of our existence and allowing His Gospel to guide our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and actions.

After his calling, Levi organised a great banquet in his house, inviting many tax collectors and others to share a meal with Jesus. This banquet was more than an expression of hospitality. It was a celebration of a new beginning, a joyful response to the mercy he had received.

But the Pharisees and scribes complained: “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Their question reveals a dangerous spiritual attitude: the temptation to divide humanity into the righteous and the sinful, the worthy and the unworthy.

Christ answered with words that remain at the very heart of the Christian message: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Here, our Lord reveals Himself as the Divine Physician, who comes to heal the spiritual wounds of humanity.

In the Orthodox tradition, sin is understood not only as the violation of God's commandments but also as a spiritual illness that damages our communion with God and with one another. Consequently, salvation is not merely a legal declaration of forgiveness. It is the healing, restoration, and transformation of the whole human person.

This is why the Church is often described by the Holy Fathers as a spiritual hospital. Within her life, through prayer, fasting, confession, the Holy Eucharist, acts of love, and sincere repentance, we receive the healing grace of Christ.

We must remember, however, that repentance, or metanoia in Greek, means much more than feeling sorry for our mistakes. It means a profound change of mind, heart, and direction. It is the courageous decision to turn away from sin and return to the loving embrace of our heavenly Father.

Levi's life demonstrates precisely this transformation. The man who once sat collecting money became a disciple who followed Christ. His priorities changed, his heart opened, and his life acquired a new and eternal purpose.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today's Gospel also challenges us to examine our attitude towards others. Are we sometimes like the Pharisees, quick to judge and slow to forgive? Do we welcome those who struggle, or do we distance ourselves from them?

Our Orthodox faith calls us to combine faithfulness to the truth with compassion towards every human being. We must never confuse hatred of sin with rejection of the sinner.

The Lord who called Levi continues to call each one of us today. His invitation is personal, loving, and full of hope.

May we have the humility to recognise our spiritual illnesses, the courage to repent, and the faith to follow Christ without hesitation.

And may our parishes always be places of welcome, forgiveness, spiritual healing, and genuine Christian love, where every person can encounter the mercy of the living God.

Amen.

Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis (1856-1928)

A scholarly and pastoral life in service of the Church

From Kalymnos to Constantinople, Antwerp and Cardiff

Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis (1856–1928) was a distinguished Orthodox cleric, theologian, educator, and intellectual whose ministry extended from Constantinople to Western Europe. Renowned for his erudition, pastoral zeal, and commitment to Hellenic education, he left a lasting mark on the Orthodox communities of Belgium and Great Britain. His life and works reflect the intellectual and missionary vitality of the Ecumenical Patriarchate during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Gennadios Themelis, born Georgios Themelis, entered the world on November 3, 1856, on the Aegean island of Kalymnos, to pious parents Michael and Aikaterini Themelis. His early education took place in his native island, where he completed his primary and secondary studies under the guidance of renowned teachers such as Michail Pelekanos and Antonios Karantonis. Even at a young age, he exhibited a profound inclination toward theology, music, and letters.

A vital yet often overlooked dimension of Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis intellectual and spiritual formation lies in his profound engagement with Byzantine ecclesiastical music, both as a practitioner and as a theorist. Born and raised in Kalymnos, he received his first musical training from his brothers, who were themselves skilled chanters in the island's local church tradition.

He subsequently studied the theoretical aspects of Byzantine music under the eminent Nikolaos, Protopsaltis of Smyrna, and Ioasaf the Russian, two of the foremost authorities of his time. These studies granted him a deep understanding of the modal structures, melodic ethos, and theological significance of sacred chant.

In 1883, Themelis published an important musical work entitled Ἑλληνικά Εὐαγγέλια τοῦ Ἑσπερινοῦ τῆς Ἀναστάσεως (Greek Gospels of the Vespers of the Resurrection). This composition reflects his synthesis of musical artistry and theological reflection, exemplifying his conviction that ecclesiastical music is not merely an aesthetic expression but a medium of divine revelation. For Themelis, sacred music embodied the spiritual and doctrinal continuity of the Orthodox Church; it served as a bridge between the intellectual contemplation of faith and the lived experience of worship.

His deep musical knowledge would later inform both his liturgical service and his writings, in which he frequently addressed questions of church music, its role in divine worship, and its moral influence on the faithful.

In 1871, moved by a deep vocation to serve the Church, Georgios Themelis was ordained deacon, taking the name Gennadios. Soon thereafter, he relocated to Constantinople, where he began his ecclesiastical service near the Bosporus. His diligence and spiritual devotion led to his appointment in 1878 to the Church of the Presentation of the Mother of God (Εἰσόδια τῆς Θεοτόκου) in Pera (Beyoğlu), the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Constantinople.

There, as preacher and cantor, he distinguished himself by his eloquence, musical acumen, and pastoral commitment. It was during this period that he deepened his study of theology, philosophy, and the arts, developing a refined intellectual profile that combined Byzantine spirituality with Western philosophical inquiry.

Following his ordination to the priesthood in 1900, Archimandrite Gennadios was appointed by Ecumenical Patriarch Constantine Vasdean of the newly established Orthodox parish in Antwerp, Belgium. His tenure in Antwerp, which lasted approximately fifteen years, was a period of remarkable pastoral and intellectual productivity.

In Antwerp, he devoted himself tirelessly to the education and moral edification of the local Greek community. He organized language instruction for children of mixed Greek-Flemish parentage, established cultural and student associations, and encouraged religious study and Hellenic identity among expatriates.

Simultaneously, he pursued higher education at the University of Brussels, where he was awarded the doctorate in philosophy, specializing in psychological and moral studies. His doctoral work reflected his conviction that Christianity constituted a moral force capable of transforming human society - a theme that would underpin much of his later writing.

Archimandrite Gennadios was a prolific writer, contributing essays and studies to leading theological and ecclesiastical journals such as Ekklēsiastikē Alētheia, Sion, Anatolikon Asteri, and Anaplasis.

His published and manuscript works include:

·        Treatise on the Moral Power of Christianity (Πραγματεία περί ἠθικῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ Χριστιανισμοῦ), a philosophical-theological exploration of ethics and Christian virtue.
·        A poetic composition On Fire and the Conflagration and Its Victims, written in response to the great fire of Büyükdere near Constantinople.
·        Numerous studies on Byzantine ecclesiastical music, including settings of the Gospel readings for the Great Vespers of the Resurrection.
·        Two major unpublished treatises: one titled On Ecclesiastical Music and Its Function in Divine Worship, Against the Abuses of Certain Cantors, and another addressed to Patriarch Joachim III, titled On Religion and the Religious Condition of the Greek Nation.

Through these writings, Themelis combined pastoral insight with scholarly precision, defending the integrity of Orthodox liturgical tradition while engaging the intellectual currents of his age.

When Antwerp was bombarded during the First World War, Archimandrite Gennadios narrowly escaped and fled to London, where he initially served as a chanter in the Greek Orthodox Church. His pastoral competence soon led to his appointment as dean of the Orthodox Community of Cardiff, Wales, a post he would hold from October 21, 1917, until his death in 1928.

At the time, Cardiff was a thriving maritime center, home to a significant Greek seafaring population drawn to its coal trade and shipping industry. Archimandrite Gennadios' ministry was pivotal in consolidating the Orthodox presence in South Wales, fostering a sense of unity and faith among the diaspora. His records show the performance of 219 baptisms (94 female, 125 male), 46 weddings, and 119 funerals during his tenure - a testament to his deep pastoral engagement.

He was widely respected by the local orthodox population, remembered for his gentle demeanor, intellectual depth, and profound spirituality. His leadership coincided with the consecration of the Cardiff Orthodox Church on April 24 (year uncertain, likely early 1920s) by Archbishop Cyril of Cyprus.

Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis passed away in Cardiff on December 12, 1928, at the age of seventy-two. He was interred in the Cathays Cemetery, making him the only Orthodox priest of the Cardiff Community to have died and been buried there.

His death was mourned both in Britain and in the wider orthodox world. The Greek periodical Anaplasis, to which he had long contributed, published a heartfelt obituary, praising his lifelong devotion to education, music, theology, and philanthropy. In his will, he left significant bequests to churches, schools, theological institutions, and religious journals, including £200 to the periodical Anaplasis, underscoring his enduring commitment to spiritual and intellectual renewal.

Nearly a century later, on October 6, 2021, his grave was rediscovered through the efforts of the Orthodox Community of Cardiff. A memorial service was held, presided over by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Claudiopolis, with the participation of Protopresbyter Anastasios D. Salapatas and local community leaders. Plans for the restoration of his tomb were subsequently initiated, honoring his memory as a founding figure of Orthodox life in Wales.

The life of Archimandrite Gennadios Themelis epitomizes the synthesis of Hellenic education, Orthodox spirituality, and pastoral devotion. From Kalymnos to Constantinople, Antwerp, and Cardiff, his journey reflects the transnational mission of the Orthodox Church in the modern era. As priest, scholar, and musician, he served with humility and intellectual vigor, leaving behind a legacy of faith, learning, and cultural bridge-building that continues to inspire the Orthodox diaspora of Western Europe.

Anglican-Orthodox Dialogue 2025

Meeting of the International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue,
26 Sep- 3 Oct 2025

We welcome members of ICAOTD to St David's (in Wales, UK) for their meeting this week!

The Anglican Communion has long held ecumenical dialogues with other global church families. The dialogue with the Eastern Orthodox churches is one of the oldest. Each year, the Commission of about 12 Anglicans and 12 Orthodox - Bishops, Metropolitans, other senior clergy and theologians - meets for a week in various places around the world. Dean Sarah has been a member since 2015. The Commission is currently working on topics in the area of theological anthropology, and this year will reflect on how we understand Mission, and review a draft book on the history of the dialogue, to mark its half century.

More information is available at
https://www.anglicancommunion.org/ecumenism/ecumenical-dialogues/orthodox.aspx

While most of their time will be spent in meetings at Tŷ'r Pererin, the Commission will also join in the usual rhythm of Cathedral worship, and there will be some special services, including two led by the Orthodox members, according to their own tradition. Everyone is welcome to attend these, as well as always being welcome at all our regular services. The special services are:

• Sunday 28 September, 11am - Holy Eucharist, with Bishop Dorrien presiding, and as preacher Bishop Michael Lewis, the Anglican Co-Chair of the Dialogue (retired Bishop of Cyprus and the Gulf, and also formerly Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East).

• Monday 29 September, 6pm - Vespers, which the Orthodox delegates will lead.

• Wednesday 1 October, 8am - Divine Liturgy (i.e. Holy Eucharist), led by the Orthodox delegation, with Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium, the Orthodox Co-Chair, presiding. Only Orthodox may receive the Eucharist, but all are invited to share the 'Antidoron', bread blessed (but not consecrated), at the end of the service. This service will be about 90 minutes long.

In addition, there will be a reception hosted by the Cathedral after the special 4pm Choral Evensong on Sunday afternoon, 28 September, for the Eve of Michaelmas, and everyone is warmly invited to join us then for a fuller opportunity to chat with our visitors.

The face of a Merchant Seafarer Lost to the Sea

Aldron.
