A Poem on the Freshers’ Fair

My good friend, Philhellene and Poet Richard Devereux, sent me a message and a new Poem.

His message:

Friday, a week ago, I drove up to the Downs about 10:00 am to go for a walk. Behind a high metal fence were several large marquees and a crowd of students queuing to enter the site. It was Freshers' Fair - to welcome the first-year students who have just arrived in Bristol.

I thought I would see if I could get in as I thought it would be interesting to talk the Greeks and the Poets. The attached poem tells what happened next.

I noticed the Skopians, a pleasant young man and woman, had a banner, white letters on red: MAKEDONIA. To gain their confidence, I told them how moved I had been as a boy by the Skopje earthquake, how I had visited Lake Doiran and looked over the border but our car hire insurance prevented us from going there. Then I lectured them on the terms of the Prespa Agreement. Their only defence was we have been calling it Makedonia since we were small children.

His Poem:

On Blagging My Way Into Freshers’ Fair, Aged 72

Stall Holders Only the sign says.
I lower my eyes and carry on walking
briskly past the girl manning the barrier –
“Greek Club”, I boom. I’m in.

In long marquees, Clubs and Societies
have set up stalls on trestle tables.
Just turned ten – Freshers’ Fair is now open

and I am
as if a boy playing ball on some forbidden lawn.

In the International tent,
about fifty clubs in national colours
offer nibbles of native foods,
flyers for coming events,
photos, posters, keyrings,
and most of all, connections.

No show from the Hellenic Society
but it could be kicking off when they do;
their neighbours – the Makedonia Society –
fly a flag without the ‘North’.
I lecture them on the Prespa Agreement;
they shrug and offer a pepper dip.

In the Performance marquee, no sign
of the Poetry Society. The Pantomime Club
suggest I try the Hobbies tent “behind you”.

Near the Scouts, Chess and the 20 Minute Club –
the Poetry Society stall. Unmanned, of course.
A metaphor of absence

that I complete with my presence
in this forbidden place.
There is nowhere poets cannot go.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2026

The iconic Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in partnership with Albert Goodman is a free to attend, three-day event that celebrates the city and its heritage links to the remarkable world of hot air ballooning.

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is one of the most popular and striking outdoor events on the calendar. This year, the world-renowned free Fiesta returned to Ashton Court, between Friday 7 August and Sunday 9 August 2026.

Those hoping to spot some special shapes at this year’s Fiesta, weren’t disappointed! Fiesta fans had seen some incredible shapes at this year’s ballooning lineup, including BBC Globe, Thomas the Tank Engine, Ordnance Survey Map, Piggy Bank, Bridgit, Ralph the Rozière, The Bristol Balloon, Wes the Wolf, Johnny the Panda and Panasonic Battery.

Ben Hardy, the executive director of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, said the team and balloonists "had a lot of fun" this year.

The festival was founded in 1979 by Don Cameron (founder of Cameron Balloons) and a small group of balloon enthusiasts who wanted to bring together international pilots for a yearly gathering.

It quickly expanded from a local meet-up into one of Europe's largest annual hot-air ballooning events, moving permanently to the sprawling Ashton Court grounds.

Στη Λυρική Σκηνή του Μπρίστολ (Bristol Beacon) απολαύσαμε χθες βράδυ «Το Όνειρο του Γεροντίου» (The Dream of Gerontius).

The talk at the Pan-Orthodox Vespers

Romanian Orthodox Church, Bristol, Sunday of Orthodoxy, 1 March 2026

Firstly, I would like to thank Father Ioan for hosting this evening and for your warm welcome, and that of your parish.  I would also like to thank Father Anastasios for organising this important annual event in the calendar of our local parishes, this Pan-Orthodox vespers.
Today, on the first Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, we commemorate the restoration of icons to their proper place in the 9th Century, known as the Triumph of Orthodoxy. This followed the second phase of the iconoclast (literally, icon smashing) controversy.

Most importantly in the affirmation of icons, they are a witness to the Incarnation.  As Saint John of Damascus says:
When God is seen in the flesh conversing with men, I make an image of God whom I see. I do not worship matter; I worship the Creator of matter who became matter for my sake.[i]
The Kontakion of today’s feast affirms the Incarnation:
The uncircumscribed Word of the Father became circumscribed, taking flesh from thee, O Mother of God[ii]
but also expresses how we live our faith:
This salvation we confess in deed and word, and we depict in the holy icons.[iii]

In our Orthodox worship, what we see and what we hear is one, it affirms the same faith.  Most importantly, it is also to be lived out in thought, word and deed.
Our worship is an icon of the Kingdom of Heaven, as affirmed in the opening blessing of the Divine Liturgy: Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
What kind of Kingdom is this?
Christ, when asked by Pilate if he was King of the Jews, responded:
My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight.[iv]

Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world. As in the time of Christ, so today, it can be a temptation to fight for our earthly kingdoms with their desire for domination and earthly power, rather than to recognise our true homeland, the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Triumph of Orthodoxy, is not in earthly battles, our victory is in the Cross of Christ: a weapon of peace and unconquerable ensign of victory.[v]
Following the opening blessing of the Divine Liturgy we pray: in peace.  In peace, let us pray to the Lord.  We are to pray in peace.  We are to be at peace within ourselves, at peace with all people as far as it depends on us, at peace with the created world.

We then pray: for the peace from on high and for the salvation of our souls. This is the same peace, Christ’s peace, the peace which is Christ, who is our salvation.
It is only having prayed for inner peace, the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding[vi], that we pray the very bold prayer: for the peace of the whole world, the welfare of the Holy Churches of God and the union of all.  The peace in our own hearts is starting point, as Saint Seraphim of Sarov famously said: acquire a peaceful spirit, and then thousands of others around you will be saved.[vii]

Before we confess our faith, in the words of the Nicene Creed, the priest blesses us: Peace be with you all. This is the blessing of Christ, who is our peace.  We then pray: Let us love one another. Our faith comes alive through mutual love: that with one mind we may confess Father Son and Holy Spirit, one in essence and undivided.  We are created in the image of God. As icons of God, we are created to love one another in the image of God the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
And we come to the Eucharistic meal, to share in the common cup: In the fear of God, with faith and love.

This is our witness to the world, which Christ prays for all believers: That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.[viii]
As we begin the Liturgy, so we conclude: in peace. Having received the Holy Gifts, having seen the true light, having received the Heavenly Spirit, having found the true faith, we go forth in peace. We are to be peace, to be icons of Christ, to be the Body of Christ in this world.
In the context of this Pan-Orthodox gathering, it is surely important to mention and pray for our brothers and sisters who are caught up in the war in Ukraine, both Ukrainians and Russians. Justifying or supporting this war is incompatible with the Gospel, it is incompatible with the Triumph of Orthodoxy we celebrate today.  Remembering our brothers and sisters who are suffering as a result of the war, let us pray not merely for a cessation of hostilities, but for a genuine, just, and lasting peace.
Peace be with you all!

Hallelujah: for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth (Revelation 19:6).

Best and worst cities in the UK

Rankings like the one above always spark debate, but they’re a useful starting point for thinking about what really makes a place liveable. Access to jobs, housing affordability, transport, green space, culture, safety, and a sense of community all tend to weigh heavily in whether a city feels like home or a daily struggle. The “best” cities often balance opportunity with quality of life, while those that rank poorly are usually grappling with long-term economic pressures, stretched services, or high living costs that outpace local wages. Of course, any list like this is a snapshot rather than a verdict - people’s experiences can differ wildly from street to street.

I’m pleased (and not entirely surprised) to see Bristol ranked second best, especially as it’s the city I call home. Bristol consistently scores well for its creative energy, independent spirit, strong job market, and access to both countryside and coast, even if rising house prices remain a real challenge. It’s a city that feels dynamic without being overwhelming, and that balance counts for a lot. Ultimately, what makes a place good or bad isn’t just statistics - it’s how well a city supports everyday life, fosters belonging, and gives people room to thrive. Lists come and go, but those qualities are what truly define where we want to live.
