Theme: IS ARISTOTLE'S ETHICAL AGENT AN EGOIST?

In Aristotle's view, each human agent aims ultimately at his/her own happiness (in Greek, eudaimonia). Ethical agents conceive of this ethically, as equivalent to living and acting well, that is, in accordance with the virtues. Yet does this focus upon one's own happiness remain too egocentric, even if that isn't equated with pleasure?

The speaker will argue that it doesn't and that it is rather Aristotle's way of milking the fact that one is responsible for one's own actions. One should still give thought to what one is doing (which is partly a matter of the consequences); and one needs to have the right concrete motives (e.g., love of friends and country). It is not one's own interests, but one's own actions, that specially concern one. There may be something a bit self-regarding about this -- but it is not egoism.

Anthony Price has written three books on the ethics and moral psychology of Plato and Aristotle.
