The Small World, the Great
- A Tribute to Odysseas Elytis
A Tribute to the Poet Odysseus Elytis. With music
by George Couroupos.
Presented under the auspices of the President of
the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos.
The poetry of Odysseus Elytis (1911–1996) is
lyrical, bold and expressive, capturing the ‘small and great’ spirit of the
Greek landscape and its timeless values of innocence, justice and love. In
awarding him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979, the Academy declared that
Elytis’ poetry ‘depicts with sensual strength and intellectual clear sightedness,
modern man’s struggle for freedom and creativity’. The poet responded that he
wished his award to honour the long tradition of Greek poetry, ever since the
time of Homer.
At this special event Elytis’ words are brought
alive in readings and song, with music by the outstanding Greek composer George
Couroupos, written to accompany a new multilingual anthology of his poetry and
prose (Ikaros Publishing 2016), and performed by a live piano quartet.
Presented in Greek and English.
