COTY in Torquay

 
On 18 April 2026, when the Paschal joy had not yet faded from the hearts of the faithful, something small -and perhaps easily overlooked- took place in the seaside town of Torquay.
 

It was announced as the first Orthodox youth gathering there. The kind of thing people imagine will be full-laughter, crowded church, voices echoing through the nave. Yet that morning, the church of St Andrew Torquay stood quieter than expected.
 
Father Trayan Goranov had prepared for fifty. There were far fewer.
 
The tables, laid out with care -sandwiches, sweets, cakes prepared with love- seemed almost too generous. Even he, who had seen much in parish life, was surprised. On ordinary Saturdays, for Vespers and discussion, more people would come.
 
But grace does not measure by numbers.
 
At 12:30, the day began not with chatter, but with prayer - the solemn, radiant rhythm of the Paschal Hours. The words of the Resurrection, still fresh from the Feast, filled the church again. A visiting priest, Father Gregory Floridis, stood among them, lending his voice to the singing. It was not loud. But it was alive.
 

Afterward, Father Trayan spoke. He told the history of the ancient church that now shelters a small, multinational flock under the omophorion of the Archbishop of Thyateira. Stones, he reminded them, remember. Walls, if we listen, speak.
 
Then came the theme of the day: “Pascha: The Feast of Feasts and Triumph of Triumphs.”
 
The Reader Arsenios-Charlie Copleston - stood by the whiteboard, carefully writing each point, as if preserving something fragile. The words were familiar. And yet, in that small gathering, they seemed newly discovered.
 
Before the food was touched, Father Gregory spoke again -lightly, warmly-adding details, insights, small treasure of meaning, about the Resurrection in our lives as Orthodox Christians. Theological insights, quoting from Scripture and from the hymnology of the Church. The kind that does not demand attention, but reward it.
 
Then came the meal and getting to know each other.
 
Outside, the sun had broken through, as if it too had decided to attend. The group walked toward the sea, toward the harbour where the water shimmered against the anchored yachts.
 
They walked the pier together.
 

Fishermen stood there, patient and unsmiling, casting their lines again and again - catching nothing. The sea, they said, had been rough in the past days. The fish had withdrawn into the depths.
 
No one laughed at them. Something about it felt… familiar.
 
The wind grew stronger, as it does by the sea. They turned back inland, and Father Gregory, with the ease of one among friends, offered to buy coffee. Tables were pulled together outside - too eagerly, perhaps. A waitress, firm and unyielding, reminded them that even good intentions can obstruct others.
 
So, the tables were separated. And for a moment, so were they.
 
Back at the church about 5 pm, time pressed gently but insistently. Father Gregory had a long journey ahead - five hours to London. They sent him off first, reluctantly, as one sends away a brother rather than a guest.
 
Then something deeper began.
 
The discussion about repentance and confession.
 
And suddenly, the questions multiplied.
 
Not abstract questions - but careful ones. Hesitant ones. Questions that revealed distance. It became clear: many had never confessed.
 
Or not truly.
 
And beneath every question, there was one unspoken concern, finally said out loud:
 
Is it really secret? What if the priest reveals to others our deeds and thoughts?
 
Father Trayan did not rush his answer. He spoke plainly, firmly - like a man placing a cornerstone:
 

Nothing -under any circumstance- would ever be revealed. What is confessed is sealed, not by discipline alone, but by something far greater.
 
The room grew quieter. Not empty - quiet.
 
Later, the singer Molly (Maria) McEwan arrived, and together they served Vespers for the eve of St. Apostle Thomas. The same Thomas who doubted. The same Thomas who didn’t want to touch, because his faith was great and who later proved it with his martyrdom. It seemed fitting.
 
Evening came, though no one welcomed it.
 
They lingered. Conversations stretched. Goodbyes were delayed, then delayed again. As if, by refusing to part, they might hold the day in place.
 
But distance called them back.
 
One would travel 120 miles to Falmouth.
Others, 200 miles to Birmingham.
The rest would return to Plymouth, Exmouth, and nearby towns.
 
Small places. Scattered people.
 
It had not been a large gathering.
 
It had not been impressive.
 
No crowd, no spectacle, no overflowing hall.
 
And yet - Something had begun.
 
Those who were not able to travel from afar to join us or could not make it may never quite understand what they missed.
 
Not because it was grand. But because it was real.

Με την ευλογία του σεπτού μας ποιμενάρχη, Σεβασμιωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου Θυατείρων και Μεγάλης Βρεταννίας κ. Νικήτα, θα πραγματοποιηθεί  το Σάββατο 7 Μαρτίου 2026 μια μονοήμερη συγκέντρωση νέων στην Ελληνορθόδοξη κοινότητα της Αγίας Τριάδος και του Ευαγγελιστού Λουκά στο Μπέρμιγχαμ, B23 7SJ. Η εκδήλωση περιλαμβάνει δύο ομιλίες βασισμένες στο θέμα της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής, από τους Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Μελιτηνής κ. Μάξιμο και π. Νικήτα Banev.

Oι συμμετέχοντες θα έχουν επίσης την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχουν σε επιλεγμένα εργαστήρια αγιογραφίας, λειτουργικής και παρασκευής προσφόρου. Θα προσφερθεί νηστίσιμο γεύμα από την κοινότητα. Η εκδήλωση θα ξεκινήσει στις 12:00 το μεσημέρι και θα ολοκληρωθεί με τον Εσπερινό στις 17:00.

Για όσους επιθυμούν να ταξιδέψουν από το Λονδίνο, διατίθεται λεωφορείο από τον Καθεδρικό Ναό της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου στο Wood Green, N22 8LB, με αναχώρηση στις 08:30. Archdiocesan Youth Camps 2026

 
With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas, the Archdiocese will once again run its summer residential youth camps as part of the Archdiocese Children and Youth Ministries. Camp Saint Sophrony will take place in Devon, and Camp Saint Bega will run in the North of the UK for the second year.
 

Dates:
Camp Saint Sophrony - Saturday 25 July to Friday 31 July 2026 (£300 per child)
Camp Saint Bega - Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August 2026 (£220 per child)
Camp Saint Sophrony is served by Bishop Raphael as head of clergy, and Camp Saint Bega by Father Antonios Kakalis as priest in charge.
 
Thyateira Youth Camps are for children aged 8–17 (school years 4–13). Their purpose is to deepen young people’s faith and understanding of Orthodox life, strengthen friendships within the wider Church, and cultivate a lived sense that we are one family in Christ. Over the years, many young people have returned to their parishes strengthened in faith, serving as chanters, readers, deacons, and priests. Some have even found their future spouse within the wider Church community.

Following pre-registration, qualifying applicants will receive a sales link for their chosen camp.
 
Tickets for Camp Saint Bega are already on sale. Tickets for Camp Saint Sophrony open on 1 March and are typically filled very quickly.
 
A £100 deposit is required to secure a place. Spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
 
Both camps are run entirely by voluntary staff, and the fees reflect only the true running costs.
 
I kindly ask that you review your parish finances and consider offering financial support to children from your parish who wish to attend. It would be unfortunate for anyone to miss out for financial reasons.
 
Many parishes offer annual bursaries, whether by covering the deposit, contributing half the cost, or funding the full amount. I would be grateful if you could consider doing the same and inform your parishioners of any available support as soon as possible.
 
Please also share information about the camps on your parish website and social media, and display the attached poster where appropriate.

Thyateira Christmas Appeal

 
His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain issued and distributed an Encyclical Letter addressed to all Greek Orthodox Communities in the United Kingdom.
 

The purpose of His Eminence’s message is to invite everyone to support financially the Sacred Archdiocese, as a Christmas gift, in order to meet the many needs of the growing Archdiocese.

Ονομαστήρια Αρχιεπ. Θυατείρων

 Από την Ιερά Αρχιεπισκοπή Θυατείρων και Μεγάλης Βρεταννίας ανακοινώνεται πως ο Σεβασμιώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος κ. Νικήτας θα εορτάσει τα ονομαστήριά του σε ειδική Εορταστική Εκδήλωση, η οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί τη Δευτέρα 15 Σεπτεμβρίου 2025, εορτή του Αγίου Νικήτα του Μεγαλομάρτυρος, στο ξενοδοχείο Royal Lancaster, Λονδίνο (W2 2TY).
 
Η εορταστική αυτή βραδιά θα περιλαμβάνει δείπνο τριών πιάτων και μια ξεχωριστή μουσική εμφάνιση από την Αγγελική Δάρρα. Η εκδήλωση θα ξεκινήσει στις 7 μ.μ. και όλα τα έσοδα θα διατεθούν για την ενίσχυση των Φιλανθρωπικών και Εκπαιδευτικών Υπηρεσιών της Αρχιεπισκοπής.
 
Παρακαλούνται θερμά όλες οι Κοινότητες της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής να εκπροσωπηθούν σε αυτή τη χαρμόσυνη εκδήλωση. Είναι μια ευκαιρία να τιμηθεί η διακονία του Αρχιεπισκόπου και να υποστηριχθεί το σημαντικό φιλανθρωπικό και εκπαιδευτικό έργο της τοπικής Εκκλησίας των Θυατείρων.

Έρανος Θυατείρων για πυροπλήκτους Κύπρου

 
Εφιαλτικές ώρες πέρασαν οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής Λεμεσού αυτές τις ημέρες, εξ αιτίας των φονικών πυρκαγιών, που συνέβησαν στην εν λόγω περιοχή και κάλυψαν μεγάλο μέρος και πολλά χωριά της τοπικής Επαρχίας, έχοντας ως αποτέλεσμα δύο θανάτους πολιτών, αρκετούς τραυματισμούς και μεγάλες ζημιές σε ζώα, σπίτια, λοιπά κτήρια, οχήματα και στο σύστημα ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας.
 

Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Θυατείρων και Μ.Β. κ. Νικήτας, ανταποκρινόμενος με ευαισθησία και αγάπη στο μεγάλο αυτό πρόβλημα, έστειλε εγκύκλιο στις Κοινότητες της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής, προσκαλώντας όλους να συνδράμουν οικονομικά, μέσω ειδικού εράνου που θα πραγματοποιηθεί την ερχόμενη Κυριακή 27 Ιουλίου τ.έ., με τελικό σκοπό την ανακούφιση των πληγέντων.

Grace and peace be with you in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, whose glorious Resurrection we will soon celebrate.
 
I would like to share some directives and guidance with the communities of our Holy Archdiocese as we plan and prepare for the remainder of Holy and Great Lent, Pascha, and the months to follow.
 
A Warm Thanks
I would first of all like to thank the great number of clergy who were able to attend this year’s Vespers of Forgiveness at the Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom. Your presence was a great blessing and a beautiful opportunity for us to enter Holy and Great Lent in a spirit of communion and brotherhood. Such gatherings are rare, but they are most meaningful.
 
National Holidays of Greece and Cyprus
As you know, both Greece and Cyprus will soon celebrate their national holidays, on 25 March and 1 April, respectively. Parishes with members from Cyprus and/or Greece should, as is customary, offer a Doxology at the end of the Divine Liturgy on the respective Sundays preceding these dates. 
 
Following the Doxology, it is both fitting and proper that the shared national anthem of Greece and Cyprus be sung first, followed by “God Save the King”.
 
Consecration of New Church at Monastery of St John the Baptist
The Holy Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist in Essex will be celebrating the Consecration of their newly constructed Church on Sunday 22 June. This will be a great blessing for all of us who cherish the beloved monastic community in Essex. Clergy who desire to attend Saturday evening Vespers in prayerful support of this joyous occasion are welcome to do so. However, our clergy will not be permitted to attend the Divine Liturgy and Service of Consecration itself, considering that we cannot close our parishes on a Sunday morning. This directive also applies to parishes with multiple priests. I thank you for your understanding and kindly ask that you do not submit requests for exceptions to the Archdiocese.
 
Dormition Fast
As clergy and their families are making plans for summer holidays, I take this opportunity to share a reminder that clergy will not be permitted to schedule leaves of absence for the duration of the Dormition Fast and Feast (1-15 August), or the corresponding period for parishes following the Old Calendar.
 
Financial Support for the Archdiocese
We endeavour to exercise discernment and sensitivity to the needs of our communities by not adding to your existing financial obligations with frequent requests for support of our Archdiocese. We do believe that it is feasible for all parishes to take up a collection once a year in support of the many ministries organised and run by our Archdiocese. We therefore suggest that this collection take place on Holy Friday or Holy Saturday. When you send the funds to our Archdiocese, please include your parish number and clearly state that this is your Paschal Gift to the Archdiocese, so that our accountant can properly record your community’s contribution.
 
Thank you for your consideration and attention to these points.
 
As we pass the half-way mark of this Lenten season, looking forward to Holy Week and the Great Feast of Pascha, I pray that God will bless us all and forgive our sins and shortcomings. May His mercy, peace, and joy dispel the darkness that so often threatens to engulf our world, and may we prove to be true witnesses to God’s unfathomable love by allowing the glory of the Resurrection to shine through our hearts and to brighten our faces for all to see.

Χειροτονητήριος Λόγος

 

Του Ιερολογιωτάτου π. Γρηγορίου Φλωρίδη εις Πρεσβύτερον 2/2/2025

 
Σεβασμιώτατε Αρχιεπίσκοπε Θυατείρων και Μεγάλης Βρεταννίας,
Σεβασμία των Αγίων αρχιερέων χορεία,
Εντιμότατοι Άρχοντες του τόπου,
Εξοχώτατοι Πρόξενοι της Ελλάδος και της Κύπρου
Άγιε Πρωτοσύγκελλε της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής μας,
Τίμιον Πρεσβυτέριον,
Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί Χριστιανοί,
Λαέ του Θεού ηγιασμένε,
 

'Πνεῦμα ὁ Θεός, καί τούς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν ἐν πνεύματι καί ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν.’
 
Όμως, ο Θεός, Θεός του "ἐλεεῖν καί σώζειν" ενσαρκώνεται στις εικόνες Του, στους ανθρώπους, δηλαδή σε όλους εμάς που αποτελούμε την Εκκλησία Του.
 
Πριν λίγες εβδομάδες μόνο, εορτάσαμε αυτό ακριβώς δηλ. το μέγα μυστήριο της ενσάρκου επιφανείας του Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού.
 
Και στη δική μου προσωπική ιστορία διαπιστώνω την άρρητη αγάπη Του, όπως ενσαρκώνεται, πρωτίστως, στο πρόσωπο του Παναγιωτάτου Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου, προσκυνητού, αυθέντη και δεσπότη όλων ημών κυρίου μοι κυρίου Βαρθολομαίου, ως γνήσια εικόνα και έκφραση της Ορθοδόξου θεολογίας και πίστεως.
 

Ενσαρκώνεται σε Σας Σεβασμιώτατε, τον προεστώτα της θείας ευχαριστίας της τοπικής Εκκλησίας, που ως φιλεύσπλαχνος πατέρας πάντοτε έχετε τα χέρια Σας ανοικτά για να δίνετε και να προσφέρετε το είναι Σας προς την διακονία της Βιβλικής και ιστορικής κατα Θυάτειρα Εκκλησίας. Είστε για μένα καθημερινό παράδειγμα εργατικότητας και φιλανθρωπίας. Ιδιαίτερα η έμφαση που δίνετε σε θέματα λειτουργικής και κανονικής τάξεως, αλλά και η αγωνία σας για την πανορθόδοξη ενότητα εδώ στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Χωρίς υπερβολή Σας οφείλω το ζήν και το ευ ζήν Θεοτίμητε Πάτερ και Δέσποτα.
 
Υποστασιάζεται και στον Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Κλαυδιουπόλεως κ. Ιάκωβο, τον και ευεργέτη μου για την εμπιστοσύνη Του στην αναξιότητά μου, για την ενθάρρυνσή του και την έμπνευσή του στους δρόμους της ποιμαντικής διακονίας. Ως Αρχιερατικώς προϊστάμενος της κοινότητος του Απόστολου Βαρνάβα, καταφέρνει πάντα να μεταμορφώνει το μέτριο σε άριστο, και καθημερινώς να μας εμπνέει σε αγώνες επιτυχούς διαποίμανσης ασφαλούς πορείας σε εύδιους λιμένες.
 

Αυτά ισχύουν και για τον Πνευματικό μου Πατέρα, που με αναγέννησε πνευματικά τον Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Ιλίου κ. Ραφαήλ, ο οποίος με την πρόνοια του Θεού και το κατα πάντα ευλογημένο και χαρισματικό παράδειγμά του, εκφράζω την απέραντη ευγνωμοσύνη μου διότι με τις συμβουλές αλλά κυρίως με την προσευχητική του παρουσία στη ζωή μου με καθοδήγησε στην ιερωσύνη, στην διακονία της Εκκλησίας, και μου ενέπνευσε την ζωή της ολοκληρωτικής αφιερώσεως. Με παρέλαβε σκεύος ανομίας και με κατέστησε σκεύος εκλογής. Το φωτεινό του πρόσωπο θα παραμένει για μένα πάντα κοινοποίηση εμπειρίας, προσφορά αγάπης, και πρότυπο ποιμαντικής μαρτυρίας.
 
Όχι λιγότερα οφείλω στον Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Αμορίου κ. Νικηφόρο για την πραγματικά άξια θαυμασμού φιλοξενία του, που μου προσέφερε τόσο απλόχερα. Θέλω να τον διαβεβαιώσω με μεγάλη συγκίνηση και αισθήματα υπερηφανείας ότι η φαινομενική μας απόσταση είναι μόνον τοπική και όχι τροπική. Και πάντοτε τον αισθάνομαι πλησίον ως έγγιστα! Είναι για μένα υπόδειγμα αρχοντιάς, ήθους και στοργικής έγνοιας. Η Ιερά Βασιλική Πατριαρχική και Σταυροπηγιακή Μονή των Βλατάδων, αυτός ο Παλαμικός και Βυζαντινός θησαυρός της Συμβασιλεύουσας, εκπέμπει το φώς του Φαναρίου, το οποίο ζει και φαίνει πάσι ως τηλαυγής φάρος, μαζί με την ησυχαστική παράδοση του Αγίου Γρηγορίου Παλαμά. Επιζητώ, Σεβασμιώτατε, τις πρεσβείες του Μεγάλου αυτού φωστήρος της Οικουμένης, αλλά και του Αγίου Σωφρονίου του Έσσεξ, και όλων των συγχρόνων ασκητών και Αγίων, οι οποίοι παραδίδουν την αγιοπνευματική εμπειρία της προσευχής, της εν Χριστώ αρετής και της ασκήσεως σε κάθε εποχή. Για τον λόγο αυτό η Ιερά Πατριαρχική Μονή του Τιμίου Προδρόμου εδώ στην Αγγλία παραμένει μια πνευματική όαση χρηστομίμητης πολιτείας του αγγελικού βίου στην ένσαρκη βιωτή. Όπως και η Αθωνική πολιτεία που στο πρόσωπο του πατρός Παλαμά σήμερα δείχνει πάντοτε την ουράνια πορεία και στοχοθεσία του απολύτου ιδεώδους της ενσαρκώσεως του Ευαγγελικού Λόγου.
 

Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες οφείλω στην Θεολογική Σχολή του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, στον καθηγητή και σύμβουλο των διδακτορικών μου σπουδών π. Χρήστο Φιλιώτη για την ακαδημαϊκή του προσφορά και ιδιαιτέρως ιερατική του διακονία και οικουμενική μαρτυρία στο Στρασβούργο. Επίσης, στον σεβαστό Κοσμήτορα π. Αθανάσιο Γκίκα, σύμβουλο καθηγητή μου στο μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα σπουδών, για την θεωρητική κατάρτιση και την έμπρακτη μεταστοιχείωση στο θέμα της ενοριακής ζωής στο πλαίσιο μιας τοπικής Εκκλησίας. Στους προκοσμήτορες της Σχολής, καθηγητές κυρίους κυρίους Χρυσόστομο Σταμούλη για την πολυδιάστατη ανθρωποκεντρική του δημιουργικότητα και θεολογική σκέψη και Θεόδωρο Γιάγκου, Καθηγητή του Κανονικού Δικαίου, για την ακριβή βίωση της κανονολογικής παραδόσεως.
 
Στους εφημερίους της κοινότητός μας, πατέρες Παναγιώτη Ντίκ και Πέτρο Γεωργίου για την λευιτική τους παρουσία και συνοδοιπορία στον αμπελώνα της τοπικής Εκκλησίας. Ο πρώτος με διδάσκει την εμπράγματη διακονία και ο δεύτερος την υμνολογία της, συναρπαγή για το αρτιότερο βίωμα. Τους ευγνωμονώ γιατί με συμπληρώνουν στις ελλείψεις μου.
 

Στο σημείο αυτό θα ήταν παράλειψη να μην ευχαριστήσω τον πρόεδρο της Κοινότητας, εντιμότατο Άρχοντα του Οικουμενικού Θρόνου κ. Μάριο Μηναΐδη, και τα μέλη του εκκλησιαστικού συμβουλίου του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα, ιδιαιτέρως την ερίτιμο κα Μερόπη Λιβέρα γιατί στα πρόσωπά τους αναπληρώνεται η οικογένεια μου. Στους εξοχωτάτους Προξένους τον κ. Γενικό της Κύπρου Οδυσσέα Οδυσσέως, και της Ελλάδος κ. Χρήστο Γούλα για την δυναμική και ενωτική παρουσία τους και μαρτυρία της μεγάλης και της μικρής πατρίδος. Στον κύριο Άρη Χαραλαμπίδη, πρόεδρο της Κυπριακής Αδελφότητος, στο πρόσωπο του οποίου καθρεφτίζεται για μένα το πρόσωπο του μακαριστού πατρός μου, που από το Σεπτέμβριο του 2022 αναπαύεται στην θριαμβεύουσα Εκκλησία. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι σήμερα παρίσταται αοράτως και χαίρει το πνεύμα του.
 
Με τα ταπεινά αυτά λόγια, ευχαριστίας και ευγνωμοσύνης, Σεβασμιώτατε και Θειότατε Πάτερ και Δέσποτα, επιτρέψτε μου να κλείσω την ομιλία μου και παρακαλώ όλους εσάς αγαπητοί μου Αδελφοί να με έχετε στην προσευχή Σας ώστε να με ανέχεται ο άγιος Θεός και να με αξιώνει η θεία Χάρις Του να μη μολύνω το Θυσιαστήριο Του και να μη φανώ ανάξιος των προσδοκιών Σας. Dear brothers and Sisters,
 
I stand before the Lord’s holy altar in awe, with gratitude to God, and with appreciation to His Holy Church. Firstly, and foremost, I express my gratitude to Your Eminence, as You embody the fullness of Christ’s body here in the United Kingdom, enabling all of us - your clergy and the faithful - to live out the magnificent joy of the foretaste of His kingdom, particularly here within the eucharistic synaxis. On February 19th 2023 Your Eminence ordained me to the diaconate, on the Sunday of the Last Judgement. I humbly pray, that with God’s transfiguring grace which forever moulds, heals and completes, along with Your Eminence’s prayers, example and guidance, I may live, now as a presbyter and priest of the ark of salvation, by the words ‘‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’ (Matt 25:40) I pray that through the intercessions of St Gregory Palamas and with the example of my spiritual father, His Grace Bishop Raphael of Ilion, I may serve the Church faithfully, sincerely, and in simple terms, practice what I preach, live out what I advise, placing my own trust and my very being in the hands of God’s providence and His Fatherly embrace and care. Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra reminds us that only when we come to the realisation of our own unworthiness and sinfulness can we draw closer to God, as he writes, so we then ‘become acquainted, love each other and finally be united.’ The Orthodox Church in this country, under the guidance of Your Eminence Archbishop Nikitas, has truly opened her arms to all peoples, making our rich liturgical, spiritual, pastoral and ascetic tradition passed down from the very day of Pentecost, accessible to all backgrounds and all peoples; for God ‘wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth.’ (1 Tim 2:4) I pray I am able to reflect this calling and this responsibility stemming from the grace of the holy priesthood, in each and every element of my ministry. I can only express my heartfelt appreciation to all who are prayerfully present here, particularly my mother who brought me into this world, unconditionally and endlessly cares for me and has shown so much sacrificial love. I have learnt a lot from my mother; forbearance, contentment and sacrificial love. It brings me great joy that recently she has, in a sense, re-affirmed and further expressed her Christian faith, by commencing catechism with Fr Mark in Glasgow, a clergyman who has had an impact on my own journey within the life of the Church. 
 

Your Eminence, allow me to recall two very simple yet powerful and meaningful phrases of yours, which you shared in wisdom and with fatherly love. Firstly, I recall dropping you off at Thessaloniki airport following my ordination to the diaconate. As I greeted Your Eminence and bid you farewell as you entered the airport terminal I wholeheartedly said ‘θα σας τιμήσω με την διακονία μου.’ I will try honouring you with my ministry. To which you replied, I know. These two words were all that I needed to be assured of your support, your care - not only for me but for all your clergy who you have chosen to serve your church, under your omophorion. 
 

I also thank Your Eminence for offering me perhaps the wisest pieces of advice a celibate clergyman may hear. You told me an unmarried clergyman must have, not only experience of administration, but of parish life. Though I may not have realised its utmost significance back then, I certainly do now. I am grateful for being appointed here in this community consisting of the historical churches of the Dormition of the Mother of God and St Barnabas. A community served by the beloved Archbishop Gregorios of blessed memory, Metropolitan Athanasios of Kolonia and now by His Grace Bishop Iakovos, who has patiently and graciously looked after me, supports me, and guides me, as I try to assist Him in his administrative and pastoral ministry here in North London. 
 

Allow me to thank the holy hierarchs and clergy, particularly those who have travelled afar, including His Grace Bishop Maximus of Melitene, to whom I am truly grateful for His prayerful presence and gracious support, as well as Fr Athanasios Melissaris, Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne and president of the faculty of Social Theology of the Νational and Kapodistrian University of Athens. I thank the Archdeacons George and Andronikos for their brotherly love and cooperation. The monastics who remember me in their prayers, all the blessed families who have embraced me and encouraged me in our new initiatives and ministries, to our community and school committee members, leaders and office staff with whom I work on a daily basis with such harmony, ethos and collaboration. 
 

Finally, a humble thought to the young people who are here today. My own albeit limited experience tells me that the Church truly is a family, we are a family in Christ. Beyond our biological hypostasis, or way of being, or to put it simply beyond our own family unit at home, we are also continuously invited into an ecclesial mode of being, a wider family called the Church of Christ. Within this family, the Risen Lord transforms, heals and renews each of us and moulds us into heirs of His kingdom. Your Eminence, beloved in the Lord, please pray I am able to be and remain a vessel of this sanctifying work, in our broken and unfair world which forever seeks the sun of righteousness and the lover of humankind, Amen.
