Monastic Tradition and Orthodox Theology Today

*3-4 December will be full days of lectures and discussion, with a full day visit to The Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist, Essex, on Saturday 5 December.
 
Our 2026 Winter School will look at profound and sometimes unexpected ways in which the monastic tradition and theologians formed by it play a vital role in the rediscovery of 'theology as a liturgy of the Church' (Archimandrite Vasileios of Iviron), expressed alike in our teaching and in all facets of life. 
 
We will explore how monastic experience informs, perhaps transforms, our understanding of Scripture and of the human being; how it underpins pastoral service to 'the world'; and its powerful witness to contemporary spiritual seekers hungry for the sacred.

Union Without Confusion

 
IOCS is proud to host on Tuesday 30 June 2026 the UK book launch of the important work by Prof Peter Bouteneff, “Union Without Confusion: Councils and Christology Beyond the Chalcedonian Divide”, in-person at Trinity College, Cambridge. The event will begin with a presentation from the author, a response from the Coptic Archbishop Angaelos of London and member of the board of Trustees will then follow.
 

This book offers a fresh perspective on the conciliar era, exploring the separation between Eastern and Oriental Orthodox post Chalcedon. it examines the theological formulations of the seven great councils alongside other key writings- presented here in Greek with English translations. It invites a reconsideration of figures long revered or rejected by the different churches, and traces how Greek philosophical terminology was gradually reshaped to express Christian belief-a process that took different forms across the diverse regions in late antiquity. More than a reappraisal of the past, this study challenges readers to reflect on the nature of patristic authority, and its enduring implications for theology and the restoration of communion among the churches.

Analogical Identities

 
On Wednesday 17 June 2026 there will be the online book launch of Analogical Identities: The Creation of the Christian Self, Volume 2: Intermeaningfulness, Self-catholicization, Meta-narcissism, and Christian Theology.
 

The author The Very Revd Prof Nikolaos Loudovikos will be present.
 
Fr Nikolaos is a Visiting Professor of the Institute and Professor of Religious Studies, Hermeneutics of Religion, and Didactics οfReligion at the School of Education of the University of Ioannina and at the University of Balamand, Lebanon.
 
He is the author of twenty books of Systematic or Philosophical Theology and Hermeneutics of Religion, and numerous articles, translated in ten languages.
 
He is the Senior Editor of Analogia: The Pemptousia Journal for Theological Studies.
 
Following the first volume entitled Analogical Identities: The Creation of the Christian Self of a trilogy dedicated to Christian anthropology in a modern re-assessment, the present second volume deals with the specific content of this concept of “Analogical Identity” as a new hermeneutic retrieval of Christian anthropology in its relation with its historical roots and in the light of modern Philosophical and Psychological thought, to which we thus introduce some new conceptual tools.
 
At the same time, a theological criticism of modern Philosophy and Psychology is initiated, and some new anthropological concepts of theological provenance are proposed.

Orthodox Choreographies - Book Launch

 

Orthodox Choreographies - Jerusalem, Coexistence, and the Holy Sepulchre

Join us on Thursday 19 March 2026, 18:00 (GMT), at the Woolf Institute for an informal Cambridge launch of Orthodox Choreographies by Revd Dr George Tsourous (Archdeacon of the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain).
 
This event marks an informal Cambridge launch of Orthodox Choreographies by Dr Tsourous, an anthropological study of Christian life and inter-communal dynamics in Jerusalem’s Old City.
 
The evening will begin with a broad framing of coexistence in Jerusalem, with attention to the lived experience of Palestinian Christians and the ways belonging is navigated in a city shaped by layered histories, institutions, and competing claims.
 
It will then move to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as a case study of shared space in practice - a site where spatial choreography and sacred materiality play an active role in sustaining (and sometimes straining) relations. A respondent-led conversation will follow the talk, before opening to Q&A.
 
This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies and the Woolf Institute.

Lecture Day on Lev Shestov

 

Today a compelling exploration of the radical thought of Lev Shestov is taking place, organised by The Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies. Shestov is a provocative voice in existential philosophy and a fierce critic of metaphysical certainty. 

 

This event delves into Shestov’s bold re-reading of the Western philosophical tradition and his call to reclaim faith, freedom, and the mystery of existence.

On Friday 6 June, the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge will host a lecture day exploring the relationship between the theological language of Sergii Bulgakov and Christos Yannaras, titled: 'God and Words. An Encounter Between Sergii Bulgakov and Christos Yannaras'.
 

The day will consist of two presentations:

Dr. Aleksandra Stevanovic is a Research Associate at the University of Kragujevac, Serbia, and an Adjunct Professor at Woxsen University in India. Her academic research relates to the anthropology of technology, theology and technology relations, and AI ethics. She has participated in over thirty national and international conferences and delivered lectures in Serbia, India, Greece, Lebanon, Poland, and the United States of America.

Nicolae Steinhardt’s ‘Journal of Joy’

 
It is with great joy that we announce the UK Book Launch of Nicolae Steinhardt’s ‘Journal of Joy’ (‘Jurnalul fericirii’) – the first official English translation of this Romanian classic, published by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press (Yonkers, NY). 

To celebrate this long-awaited publication the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge with the support of the Romanian Embassy in London is hosting a book launch and public lecture in London, 1 Belgrave Square, London SW1X 8PH.
 
The event will take place on Friday, 23 May, at 6:00 pm, featuring Rt Revd Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury) and Revd Prof. Bogdan Bucur, who will represent the publisher, St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary, NY, where he serves as Associate Professor of Patristics.

I am writing to let you know about our Arts Festival, which is taking place here in Bath on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October 2024.  We are supporting Genesis Trust, a local charity supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the Bath area.
 

The program, which is attached and also available here includes a talk by Aidan Hart, a discussion organised in partnership with The Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies (IOCS), two concerts, a children’s workshop and exhibitions of icons and other art, including painting, stained glass, sculpture, photography and ceramics.

We are delighted to announce a forthcoming IOCS talk by esteemed scholar Dr Christine Chaillot on the theme of “What future for the dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches?”, on Wednesday 23 October, between 5-6pm. This is both a physical event taking place at Wesley House in Cambridge and online via Zoom.
 

Dr Christine Chaillot is the Swiss author of numerous articles and books on the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Churches in the fields of history, theology and spirituality, notably Vie et spiritualité des Églises orthodoxes orientales des traditions syriaque, arménienne, copte et éthiopienne (Le Cerf, Paris, 2010), The Orthodox Church in Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century (Peter Lang, Oxford, 2011, Les Coptes d’Égypte. Discriminations et persécutions (1970-2011) (L’Harmattan, Paris, 2014), The Theological Dialogue Between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches (Volos, 2016), The Assyrian Church of the East. History and Geography (Peter Lang, Oxford, 2021), The Traditional Teaching of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwahedo Church, (Lit Verlag, 2023). Her books have been translated into eleven languages.

10:40: Introduction to the Orthodox Church by Father Dragos Herescu & Revd Dr John Binns
 
Father Dragos Herescu is the Principal of IOCS. He is also teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the degree programmes offered through the Institute and the Cambridge Theological Federation. He is also an Affiliated Lecturer of the Divinity Faculty, University of Cambridge. An alumnus of the Institute’s MA in Pastoral Theology, Father Dragos later graduated an MPhil in Theology with the Divinity Faculty, University of Cambridge. He is in the last stage of completing a doctoral thesis with Durham University, on the secularisation paradigm in the context of Eastern Orthodoxy, with particular focus on the Romanian context. Fr Dragos serves as parish priest for ‘St John the Evangelist’ Romanian Orthodox parish in Cambridge.
 
Revd Dr John Binns has combined research and writing with ministry as a priest in the church of England. He was parish priest of Great St Mary’s the University Church Cambridge for 23 years, where he provided care and support for researchers in the university as well as developing the life of the church in central Cambridge. Since a six month period studying in the Serbian Orthodox Theological Faculty of Belgrade University in 1974, he has been involved in various kinds of ecumenical work and research in the field of east-west church relations. He has visited and lectured in several Orthodox countries including Israel/Palestine, Russia and Romania. He was a founding director of the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge where he remains a Visiting Professor. In addition he is chair of trustees of Partners for Change Ethiopia and the Aradin trust supporting churches in Iraq. His publications include an Introduction to the Christian Orthodox Churches (Cambridge University Press 2002) and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church a History (I B Tauris 2017).

11:40: ICONS AND PENTECOST: Icons as a gate to the strange homeland of heaven by Aidan Hart
 
Aidan Hart has been a professional iconographer for over forty years, with works in over twenty-five countries of the world. Recent commissions include the design of the Anointing Screen for the King’s Coronation. He is also a speaker and writer, his most recent book being Festal Icons, and has often appeared in the media to speak about icons, including the BBC Radio 4 series The Creation of an Icon. He is director and tutor for the Icon Painting Certificate programme for the King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, and is a Research Associate of the Institute of Orthodox Christian Studies in Cambridge.

On 18 November 2017, His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos was enthroned as the first Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London, having served as General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom since 1999. In addition to this new role, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark, has also seen it fit that he continue representing the Church in the United Kingdom at the ecumenical and official level as Papal Legate, and thus conferred him with the ecclesial title of Archbishop of London.
 
Having commenced his pastoral ministry in the United Kingdom in 1995 as a parish priest, Archbishop Angaelos was consecrated a General Bishop in 1999 by His Holiness, the late Pope Shenouda III, with whom he served as private secretary. He was Proclaimed Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, and the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church during a historic service at St Bishoy Monastery in Wadi-El-Natrun, Egypt.
 
Archbishop Angaelos was born in Egypt and emigrated to Australia in his early childhood with his family. After obtaining his degree in Political Science, Philosophy and Sociology, he continued on to postgraduate studies in law while working in the same field. In 1990 he returned to Egypt to the Monastery of St Bishoy in Wadi-El-Natroun where he was consecrated a monk by the late Pope Shenouda III and served as his private secretary until 1995 when he was delegated to serve in the United Kingdom. He was proclaimed Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of London on 11 November 2017 in Egypt, and enthroned over the new Diocese on 18 November 2017 at the Cathedral of Saint George in England.

The Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies is the Orthodox house of theological studies in the ancient university city of Cambridge, England. It is a full member of the Cambridge Theological Federation. As a member of the Federation, the Institute works in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Cambridge.
 
The Institute was founded in 1999 with the blessing of all Orthodox hierarchs in Western Europe. IOCS has rejoiced in having among its guest lecturers and supporters such illustrious teachers as Revd Prof Andrew Louth, Revd Dr John Jillions, Dr Elizabeth Theokritoff, Revd Prof Peter Bouteneff, Archimandrites Symeon and Zacharias of St John the Baptist’s Monastery (Essex), and the late Metropolitans Kallistos of Diokleia, Antony of Sourozh and John Zizioulas.
 
Established in an ecumenical context, the Institute trains clergy and laity to cooperate, dialogue and share with other Christians, in propagating together the Christian message to an increasingly secular and pluralist world. Its particular mission is to bring its rich Orthodox tradition in dialogue with today’s modern society, responding to the challenging questions of our times.It is – as the Institute likes to call themselves – a ‘house of generous Orthodoxy’.
 
Serving the Orthodox Church
 
The Institute serves the Orthodox Church as a whole and is governed by a Board of Directors with representatives from the various Orthodox Churches in Great Britain. There is nothing quite like the Institute elsewhere in the world. Because it is pan-Orthodox, located in a major international academic hub, and includes both lay and ordained people, the Institute can serve the Orthodox Church in a unique way.

Please note that this event is intended to offer a space where Orthodox women can talk freely among themselves, for which reason this event can ONLY be attended by Orthodox women.
 
By keeping the focus only on women has traditionally allowed Axia Women to facilitate profound conversations across jurisdictional divides that have been found to be uniquely valuable and enriching to the participating women. 
 
Axia is a network by, for, and about Orthodox women, in the service of Christ.
 
Dr Ioana Popa, among many other qualifications, is a psychiatrist, certified spiritual advisor, theologian and life coach.

A new book on Virgin Mary

 

On the 4th of March 2024, our institute (IOCS), in partnership with LOI, will host a book launch for Bishop Christopher Cocksworth's new book Mary, Bearer of Life (2023).
 
"Drawing on careful biblical exegesis, church history and ecumenical thinking, this book suggests how a serious understanding of Mary might influence our ethical thought, and considers some of the key theological tensions at the heart of the Church’s engagement with Mary."
 
Bishop Christopher Cocksworth is the Dean of Windsor, Church of England. He served as Bishop of Coventry from 2008 to 2023. Prior to becoming bishop, he was a university chaplain and the Principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge (2001-2008).
 
The event will begin with a presentation from the author followed by an ecumenical panel of respondents engaging with the book. The event will take place physically at Wesley House, and online via Zoom.
