When it comes to choosing Greece's most beautiful island, opinions are often divided between famous hotspots such as Santorini, Mykonos and Crete. Yet one tiny Ionian gem, located just an hour from Corfu, is frequently named among the country's very best.
 
Measuring just seven miles long and three miles wide, Paxos, a picturesque island with crystal-clear waters, dramatic sea caves and charming harbour villages, has quietly earned a reputation as one of Greece's most enchanting destinations. Despite its growing popularity among travellers seeking a more authentic Greek escape, the island has retained its laid-back atmosphere and traditional character. Travel writer Kendall Hill recently revealed that Paxos topped her list of favourite Greek islands after an extensive search for the perfect holiday destination.
 
Writing last year, Ms Hill said: "My favourite Greek island? It's usually the last one I visited. This year alone I've swooned over Santorini (despite the daunting crowds), spent an exceptional day at Lesbos, and found myself torn between the desert-island vibes of Kos and the rustic charm and ancient ruins of Kea, just an hour from Athens but still surprisingly undiscovered.
 
"Recently, though, I had to decide where to go away with friends next year and, after a torturous process that I imagine is not unlike picking a favourite child - assuming you have two dozen or so who are precious to you - I eventually settled on Paxos."
 
The island sits south of Corfu in the Ionian Sea and can be reached by a hydrofoil journey that takes around an hour, or by a ferry from Corfu Town that takes two hours. Unlike some of Greece's larger and busier islands, Paxos offers visitors a peaceful retreat characterised by olive groves, secluded coves and postcard-perfect waterfront settlements.
 
Its capital, Gaios, is built around a natural harbour and is lined with colourful Venetian-style buildings, waterside tavernas and boutique shops.
 
The nearby villages of Lakka and Loggos provide an equally charming glimpse into traditional island life, with quiet squares and stunning coastal views.
 
One of Paxos' most famous attractions is its coastline. The island is surrounded by turquoise waters that rival those of the Caribbean, while striking limestone cliffs on the west coast hide spectacular sea caves that can be explored by boat.
 
Among the most popular beaches are Voutoumi and Vrika on neighbouring Antipaxos, an even smaller island another short boat ride away. Its white sands and transparent waters regularly feature in lists of Greece's most beautiful beaches.
 
The island's relatively small size also makes it ideal for exploring. Visitors can walk ancient footpaths through olive groves, discover hidden swimming spots or simply spend afternoons watching fishing boats drift into harbour.

Every summer, millions of tourists flock to Greece, drawn by visions of whitewashed houses, crystal-clear turquoise waters and picturesque sunsets. But, while Santorini and Mykonos soak up much of the spotlight - and the crowds - many equally stunning destinations across the country remain overlooked.
 

From hidden island gems to charming mountain villages, Greece has far more to offer than those familiar Instagram backdrops. As overtourism begins to strain the most popular spots, it's high time travellers widened their search and discovered the lesser-known corners of this beautiful country. One perfect island to commence this exploration is the small but beautifully formed island of Serifos, located in the Cyclades archipelago.
 
Serifos, measuring just 28.95 square miles, lies in the Aegean Sea, south of Kythnos and northwest of Sifnos, its better-known neighbours. For those dreaming of the perfect Greek island holiday without being surrounded by tourists, this is the perfect destination, as most holidaymakers do not even realise Serifos exists.

As soon as you arrive on Serifos at the port of Livadi, tourists catch a glimpse of its beautiful sandy beaches against an impressive view of the capital, Serifos (Chora), which is dotted with whitewashed houses on the slopes of the hill, just like those on Santorini which tourists flock to see in their millions each year.
 
The island is almost in the shape of a complete circle and boasts 74 beaches all around its shoreline, where you will find everything from water sports to secluded natural coves perfect for relaxing. Many of the beaches have tavernas nearby, meaning you can always enjoy a home-cooked traditional Greek meal at almost any time of day. The island's pride is Psili Ammos, which has received an award as the top among the 20 best beaches in Europe.
 

The village of Chora is divided into two neighbourhoods, Kato Chora (lower) and Ano Chora (upper). While there is a ring road around the village, the streets within the village are mostly pedestrianised, meaning tourists can take a quiet stroll to restaurants, tavernas, shops and small squares.
 
If you are up for the challenge, take the labyrinth of stairs that lead up to the Agios Konstantinos chapel above Chora, which will reward you with the most incredible views of the surrounding sea.
 

Arguably the most impressive monument to visit on Serifos, however, is the Aspros Pýrgos, a Hellenistic marble watchtower built around 300BC, with two-metre-high preserved walls, complete with an interior staircase. It stands on a hilltop just east of the road from Chora to Mega Livadi, near Mega Chorio. At least four other ancient towers have been located, including the megalithic Psaros Pyrgos or "Couch of the Cyclops" in the southwestern corner of the island.
 
Serifos is accessible via a 2.5-hour high-speed ferry from Athens' port, Piraeus, as well as other islands of the Cyclades group. The fact that the island does not have its own airport helps it to retain its hidden gem character. You can also extend your stay, in Livadi for a more vibrant atmosphere like Kyma Studios, or Chora for a quieter and more traditional experience, at a hotel like Perma Serifos.

Η Σκιάθος στο Λονδίνο

 
Κατά τη χθεσινή μου επίσκεψη στη μεγαλούπολη του Λονδίνου χρησιμοποίησα στον υπόγειο σιδηρόδρομο. Σε έναν κεντρικό και πολυσύχναστο σταθμό, που ονομάζεται Russell Square, βρήκα και φωτογράφισα την αφίσα της παρούσας ανάρτησης.
 

Είναι καλοκαίρι και ο κόσμος, ιδιαίτερα δε οι Άγγλοι, ταξιδεύουν στην πανέμορφη Πατρίδα μας και πιο συγκεκριμένα στα υπέροχα, από πολλές πλευρές, νησιά μας. Έτσι τέτοιου τύπου διαφημίσεις είναι πάντα ευπρόσδεκτες από τους ταξιδιώτες του Λονδέζικου μετρό. Ας ευχηθούμε η φετινή καλοκαιρινή τουριστική περίοδος να είναι καλή, καρποφόρα και προσοδοφόρα για τον Ελληνικό Τουρισμό και τις κατά τόπους τουριστικές μονάδες.

Τα ελληνικά νησιά

 
Η Ελλάδα έχει περισσότερα από 6.000 νησιά!!! Ενώ μόνο 227 από αυτά κατοικούνται, κάθε νησί έχει μια μοναδική κουλτούρα και τοπίο, εξασφαλίζοντας ότι κάθε προορισμός θα φέρει μια ολοκαίνουργια περιπέτεια!
 

Τα νησιά αποτελούν το κύριο χαρακτηριστικό της μορφολογίας της Ελλάδας και αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του πολιτισμού της χώρας ανά τους αιώνες.
 
Τα ελληνικά νησιά χωρίζονται σε συγκροτήματα :

4. Δωδεκάνησα νησιά, το μεγαλύτερο συγκρότημα των ομίλων στα νοτιοανατολικά
 
5. Σποράδες, η μικρότερη ομάδα νησιών, στα ανοιχτά του Βόλου και της Εύβοιας
 
6. Ιόνια Νησιά, που βρίσκονται στα δυτικά της ηπειρωτικής χώρας στην άλλη πλευρά της Ελλάδας, το Ιόνιο Πέλαγος.
 
Η Κρήτη με τις γύρω νησίδες και η Εύβοια παραδοσιακά αποκλείονται από τα συγκροτήματα αυτά.

Μνήμη Οσίου Ανθίμου

 
Ο αγαπητός Αδελφός και συλλειτουργός Αρχιμ. Βησσαρίων Κοκλιώτης, Ιερ. Προϊστάμενος του Καθεδρικού Ναού Τιμίου Σταυρού και Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ, στην περιοχή Golders Green του ΒΔ Λονδίνου, βρίσκεται αυτές τις ημέρες σε προσκύνημα στο νησί της Αστυπάλαιας.
 

Εκεί έχει την ωραία πνευματική ευκαιρία να προσκυνά τον αύριο (4^η Σεπτεμβρίου) εορταζόμενο Όσιο Άνθιμο (1727-1782), κεφαλλονίτικης καταγωγής, που ανέπτυξε κατηχητική δράση στο Αιγαίο και αναγνωρίζεται ως Προστάτης της Αστυπάλαιας.

Της Πάλλης το βλάστημα, Κεφαλληνίας πυρσόν, τον θείον δομήτορα της των Λεπέδων Μονής, φαιδρώς ευφημήσωμεν, Άνθιμον τον ασκήσει τον εχθρόν καθελόντα, χάριν δε ιαμάτων εκ Κυρίου λαβόντα, πρεσβεύοντα εκτενώς ημάς διασώζεσθαι.

Η Σαντορίνη, ένα εκπληκτικό νησί στο Αιγαίο, είναι ένας από τους πιο διάσημους και γραφικούς προορισμούς της Ελλάδας. Γνωστή για τα μαγευτικά ηλιοβασιλέματα, τα ασβεστωμένα κτίρια με τους μπλε τρούλους και τα κρυστάλλινα νερά, η Σαντορίνη προσφέρει ένα μοναδικό μείγμα φυσικής ομορφιάς και πλούσιας ιστορίας. 

Το νησί είναι χτισμένο στα απομεινάρια μιας ηφαιστειακής καλντέρας, δίνοντάς του εντυπωσιακούς βράχους και μαγευτική θέα στο πέλαγος. Οι επισκέπτες μπορούν να εξερευνήσουν αρχαία ερείπια, να χαλαρώσουν σε μοναδικές παραλίες με μαύρη και κόκκινη άμμο και να απολαύσουν την τοπική κουζίνα και κρασιά. Με τη ρομαντική ατμόσφαιρα και τα γραφικά τοπία της, η Σαντορίνη αποτελεί κορυφαία επιλογή για ταξιδιώτες που αναζητούν μια αξέχαστη μεσογειακή εμπειρία.

Κρυμμένο διαμάντι

Ο Νίκος μας και η σύζυγός του Πριγκίπισσα Έριν, στο πλαίσιο των καλοκαιρινών τους διακοπών, επισκέφθηκαν μεταξύ άλλων και το νησί Κίμωλος.  

Στο βίντεο της παρούσας ανάρτησης, βλέπουμε τον Νίκο να μας προσφέρει φανταστική ξενάγηση και να ονομάζει την Κίμωλο «Greece’s Hidden Gem»!

Στου Αιγαίου τον Παράδεισο

Ο Νίκος και η Έριν ταξίδεψαν -και μαζί τους κι εμείς- στο υπέροχο Αιγαιοπελαγίτικο νησί της Μήλου, εκεί όπου ανακαλύφθηκε το περίφημο άγαλμα, η Αφροδίτη της Μήλου. Θεωρείται ως το πιο εντυπωσιακό νησί των Κυκλάδων. Ηφαιστειογενή πετρώματα βάφουν τα βράχια στις παραλίες κόκκινα, ροζ, πορτοκαλί! Ο Νίκος αναφέρει:

Agioi Anargyroi - a traveller reports

 
On 1 July the Orthodox Church celebrates Saints Kosmas and Damian, the “Anargyroi” - literally “without silver”. The twin brothers were Syrian doctors who treated the ill without requiring them to pay. As such, they could be viewed as heralds of the National Health Service. I first encountered the Anargyroi on 1 July 1976 on Antiparos. They have been special to me ever since.
 

That summer I was travelling alone through the Greek islands, seeing them for the first time. I arrived on Antiparos on 29 June and spent that night “under the stars”, as was the way back then for poor backpackers like me. The following day I met a warm-hearted woman who offered me a room in her house: the room rate was 50 Drachmas a night. For this, I got a large double bed with a deep mattress and a hot shower.
 
No wonder I slept late on the morning of 1 July. When I emerged, blinking into the sunshine late morning and walked down to the little harbour, a band was playing and outside Spiro’s taverna long tables were laid and at them sat Greek families, out to enjoy themselves. Soon the dancing would begin. I ate there and took it all in. So this was how Greeks party.
 
I knew no Greek and it took me a while to understand what was going on: they were celebrating The Anargyroi who seemed to have some special significance on Antiparos and whom they regarded, somehow, as ‘their own’. In my diary I noted: “name day of the doctor saints – the saints of my new church”. I read this now with curiosity: I was not Orthodox then, and am not now, but I referred to “my new church”. Was I claiming the church as mine or was it claiming me as one of its own?
 
Antiparos was a magical place. The two weeks or so I spent there that summer seem to have started with a blessing. After waking up that morning to a party, I had a strong sense my time there was going to be special. A couple of days later, in the cave on Antiparos, I met a Greek girl who was to have a most profound impact on my life. For many reasons, one of them being she found me a job in Athens that September teaching in a phrontisterio.
 
When I learned more about Saints Kosmas and Damian, I realised I had other points of connection with them also. They are the patron saints of twins: I have a twin sister. They were doctors, good doctors on a mission to heal and without regard to the cost to themselves: my late wife was such a doctor.
 
So, every year, I have remembered The Anargyroi with particular affection. Antiparos is a very different place now: it has opened up in a big way to tourism, Tom Hanks has a mansion there, films are shot there on, but I am sure it continues to honour the Anargyroi.

«Στού Σκιάθου...»

 

ἤ, πὼς πρωτογνώρισα τὴ νῆσο τῶν λογίων, τὴ Σκιάθο

 

Στὴν ἱερὴ Μνήμη τοῦ ἀλησμόνητου φίλου Χρ. Β. Χειμώνα

 

Ἦταν μετὰ τὸ Πάσχα τοῦ 1963. Μαθητὲς εἴμασταν στὴ ἔκτη τοῦ Δημοτικοῦ κι ὁ δάσκαλος, ὁ μακαρίτης σήμερα Ἀνέστης Κούκουρας, ἀπὸ τοὺς Καθενοὺς τῆς Εὔβοιας, μᾶς μήνυσε πὼς ἡ ἀποχαιρετιστήρια ἐκδρομή μας θὰ ἦταν στὴ Σκιάθο. Ἔτσι, ἔνα ἠλιόλουστο πρωϊνὸ τοῦ Μαΐου μὲ τὸ τρεχαντηράκι τοῦ μπάρμπα Γιάννη τοῦ Φηύβγα κινήσαμε γιὰ τὴ γείτονα νῆσο μὲ σκοπὸ νὰ ἐπισκεφτοῦμε τὸ σπίτι τοῦ Παπαδιαμάντη καὶ νὰ πᾶμε καὶ στὶς «Κουκναριές», τὴν περίφημη παραλία μὲ τὴ χρυσὴ τὴν ἄμμο.
 
Γιὰ νὰ πῶ τὴν ἀλήθεια τὴ Σκιάθο τὴ γνωρίζαμε μονάχα ἀπὸ μακρυά, ὅταν τὴν ἀγναντεύαμε ἀπὸ τὸ χωριό μας, τὸ Κλήμα,  ν᾿ ἁπλώνεται ἀπέναντί μας μέσα στὸ πέλαγο σὰν ἔνα μεγάλο σκουροπράσινο κῆτος. Χώρια ποὺ προσέχαμε πόση ὤρα θὰ κάμει ὁ «Πασχάλης» κι ἡ «Κατερίνα», τὰ δυὸ καΐκια δηλαδή ποὺ κάνανε τὸ δρομολόγιο Σκόπελος-Βόλος, ἀπὸ τὸ φανάρι τῆς Σκιάθου ἴσαμε τὸ Λουτράκι, γιὰ νὰ δοῦμε ποιὸ εἶναι τὸ πιὸ γρήγορο, ἀλλὰ καὶ πιὸ καλοτάξιδο ὅταν εἶχε θάλασσα... Ἐπίσης θὰ πρέπει νὰ πῶ, ὄτι ἡ Σκιάθος ἔχει ἀπομείνει στὴν παιδικὴ τὴ μνήμη τυλιγμένη σὲ γκρίζα χρώματα καὶ μὲ τὴ βαρειὰ τὴ μυρωδιὰ τῆς ξυνίλας ἀνακατωμένης μὲ τὴ μυρωδιὰ τοῦ καπνοῦ καὶ τοῦ πετρελαίου. Κι αὐτὸ γιατὶ μικρὸ παιδάκι, γύρω στὰ ἑξη ἤ στὰ ἑφτά, ὅταν ἐπιστρέφαμε ἕνα κρύο χειμωνιάτικο ἀπόγευμα ἀπὸ τὸ Βόλο μὲ τρικυμία καλή, ζαλισμένοι καθὼς εἴμασταν καὶ τσακισμένοι ἀπὸ τὸν ἐμετό, ὅταν τὸ καΐκι ἔφτασε στὴ Σκιάθο, βγήκαμε ἔξω, μέχρι νὰ ξεφορτώσει, γιὰ ν’ ἀνασάνουμε. Ἦταν ὅμως τέτοιος ὁ καιρὸς, ποὺ κάθε ἄλλο παρὰ ἀνάσα πήραμε...
 
Άκόμα τὴ Σκιάθο τὴν ἔχω τυπωμένη στὴν ψυχή μου νὰ εἶναι γένους... ἀρσενικοῦ, γιατὶ οἱ παλιοὶ Κληματιανοὶ δὲ λέγανε ποτὲ ἡ Σκιάθος ἤ ἡ Σκίαθος -ποὺ προτιμοῦσε κι ὁ πολὺς Ἰω. Ν. Φραγκούλας-, ἀλλὰ «οὑ Σκιάθους»!!! Εἶχαν μάλιστα ἐφεύρει καὶ τὸ σκωπτικὸ δίστιχο:
 
«Στοὺ Σκόπιλου στοὺ Σκιάθου ρωτήσαν τοὺ γαbρό... κ.λ.π.» (Σκόπελος= ἡ Χώρα).
 
Ἔτσι λοιπόν, ἐκεῖνο τὸ πρωϊνὸ τοῦ Μαΐου ταξιδεύαμε γιὰ τὴ γείτονα νῆσο μὲ λίγο θαλασσάκι νὰ μᾶς ταρακουνάει, περιχαρεῖς ὡστόσο ποὺ θὰ τὴν  ἐπισκεπτόμασταν.
 
Τότε τὰ καΐκια καὶ τὰ πλοῖα ἄραζαν μπροστὰ στὸ λιμάνι κι ὄχι ἐδῶ ποὺ πάνε σήμερα. Ἐντύπωση δὲ ἔκανε στὸν ἐπισκέπτη ἡ μεγάλη σιδερένια σημαδούρα, ποὺ ἦταν σιμὰ στὸ «Μπούρτζι» μέχρι τὶς πρῶτες χρονιὲς τῆς δεκαετίας τοῦ 1970. Σήμερα ἀγνοῶ τὶ ἀπέγινε.
 
Σᾶ φτάσαμε, λοιπόν, πήγαμε κατευθεῖαν στὸ σπίτι τοῦ Παπαδιαμάντη, ποὺ ἦταν λίγο παραπάνω ἀπὸ τὴν προκυμαία. Ἥσυχη πολίχνη τότε ἡ Σκιάθος, δίχως κάνενα ἴχνος κοσμοπολιτισμοῦ, μᾶς συνεπῆρε στ᾿ ἀλήθεια, γιατὶ εἶχε μιὰν ἁπλότητα κι ἀρχοντιά ποὺ τὴ χαιρόταν ἡ παιδική μας ψυχή, μὲ τὰ νοικοκυρεμένα μαγαζάκια καὶ τὰ στολισμένα σπίτια. Κάτι δηλαδή ποὺ δὲν τὸ εἴχαμε στὸ χωριό μας, ἐπειδὴ ἡ Σκιάθος εἶχε κι ἄλλο ἕνα στοιχεῖο: αὐτὸ τῆς ἐπαρχιακῆς πόλεως.
 
Τὸ μόνο ποὺ θυμᾶμαι ἀπὸ τὸ σπίτι τοῦ Παπαδιαμάντη ἦταν τὸ γιατάκι σιμὰ στὴν παραστιά, ὅπου ἄφησε τὴν ἔσχατη πνοή του καὶ τὸ λιτὸ τραπέζι-γραφεῖο μὲ τὸ καλαμάρι καὶ τὸ μελανοδοχεῖο ἐκεῖνο, ποὺ ἦταν καμωμένο ἀπὸ ὀστρακοειδές, μᾶλλον πόδι μεγάλης καβούρας καὶ δέποζε πάνω στὸ σκοῦρο-καφὲ γραφεῖο... Μὲ ἐντυπωσίασε πολὺ περισσότερο ἀπὸ τὸ χειμωνιάτικο δωμάτιο μὲ τὴν παραστιά καὶ τὸ ντυμένο, μὲ γεράνιο ὔφασμα, στρῶμμα, αὐτὸ τὸ γραφεῖο. Γιατὶ τὸ σκηνικὸ τοῦ χειμωνιάτικου μὲ τὴ παραστιὰ καὶ τὸ «μιντέρι» ἦταν κάτι ποὺ τὸ ζούσαμε στὸ χωριό, ἀφοῦ ἔτσι ἦταν ὅλα τὰ σπίτια. Μὲ λίγα λόγια, εἶχα τὴν ἐντύπωση πὼς ὁ Παπαδιαμαντης ἦταν ἕνας ἀπὸ τοὺς συγχωριανούς μου, γείτονας, συγγενής, φίλος... Καὶ μήπως δὲν ἦταν!!! Ἀργότερα, ὄταν πιὸ ὤριμος διάβασα μὲ προσοχὴ τὰ Σκιαθίτικα διηγήματα τοῦ Ππδ. πρόσεξα ἕνα πράγμα: πὼς πολλὰ ἀπὸ αὐτὰ ποὺ ἀναφέρονται ἐκεῖ, τὰ εἶχα κι ὁ ἴδιος ζήσει στὴν μικρή, κλειστὴ κοινωνία τοῦ χωριοῦ μου. Καὶ τὰ ξαναζῶ διαβάζοντάς τον. Πῶς, λοιπόν, νὰ μὴν μνημονεύω κι εὐγνωμονῶ;
