Age Vocabulary

Human life is a remarkable journey, marked by different stages of growth, development, experience, and change. From infancy and childhood to adolescence, adulthood, and old age, each period brings its own characteristics, challenges, opportunities, and blessings. The accompanying image presents a useful collection of English vocabulary describing these stages, helping us understand the various terms used to identify people according to their age. Although the age ranges are approximate and some of the categories overlap, the terminology offers an interesting way to reflect upon the natural progression of human life and the different roles we assume throughout our earthly existence.

Yet human life cannot be measured simply by the number of years we have lived. Every stage possesses its own beauty, dignity, and significance. Childhood is often associated with innocence and discovery, youth with energy and aspirations, adulthood with responsibilities and achievements, and old age with wisdom, experience, and reflection. From a Christian perspective, every season of life is a precious gift from God, offering opportunities for spiritual growth, love, service, and communion with others. As the Psalmist reminds us, “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Psalm 90[89]:12). Ultimately, what matters is not merely how long we live, but how meaningfully, faithfully, and lovingly we use the time entrusted to us.
