Winter in Europe

This map gives the word for winter across Europe's languages, and the families are easy to pick out, with Winter and Vinter across the Germanic north, Zima through the Slavic east, and Hiver, Inverno and Invierno in the Romance west and south. The Latin word for winter was hiems, which is linked to the verb hibernare, meaning to pass the winter, and through it to the English word hibernate.

Hiems goes back to the same ancient Indo-European root as the Greek kheima, still visible in the modern Greek Cheimónas on the map, and the Old Church Slavonic zima, which makes the Slavic and Greek words cognates of the Latin one.
