30th anniversary Isaak and Solomou

Isaak and Solomou

          11 and 14 August 1996

Anastasios Isaak,
only twenty-four
and married just a few weeks,

snared in the barbed wire
of the Buffer Zone –
the Grey Wolves beat you to death.

I watched the film:
Canadian hunters
clubbing a seal pup.

A photographer caught
Rauf Denktaş
snapping away with his long lens.

Tasos, if only
you had stayed at home.

Solomos Solomou,
mad with grief
at your cousin’s death

what nerve to climb that flagpole
in front of the Turkish troops,
intent on tearing down
their flag.

They were always going to
shoot you dead.

You weren’t even
a third of the way up
when the guns pop-popped.

In Paralimni they’ve named
a scruffy little Square after you both:
Plateia Isaak kai Solomou.

You didn’t even get one each.
It’s the one near the butcher’s shop
where I bought two skinned rabbits.
